really? if your problem with BSN is the mastering job then crummett would be horrible for them.

The fact that McTernan pulled together Juturna is pretty impressive so I can't say he's 100% terrible but his Circa albums don't sound as bad as his other stuff.

yeah I honestly love the way the McTernnan Circa albums sound. but I just really love those albums. I think he did an amazing job with the guitars and vocals for sure if nothing else.

I think their best sounding album based solely on production is either OLG or Violent Waves, to my ears. But those are novice, uneducated ears.

It doesn't sound like a McTernan album which is goo.d. could be better, so could OLG

yea i don't have much of an ear for production but that album sounds so vivid to me, couldn't like it more.

BSN (and Appendage as well) sounds good to me, but that is one where I definitely hear how compressed everything is and how the mastering can make the high end shrill at times.

You listen to Julien Baker, so your ears have been educated very well!

Well shucks, haha. I just don't think I'm as sensitive to production variations as other people, clearly. Which is fine. I don't blame others for being more attuned to it, but it also doesn't really affect my listening.

It does sometimes for me, but not as often as others

His records are definitely loud and compressed, but I typically don't hear any signs of clipping. Kaddisfly's Set Sail the Prairie and the first Closure in Moscow LP sound really good to me, even if they're more compressed than I'd like. Maybe he's gotten worse with time, though, cause the last couple DGD releases do bother me some.

BSN may not be any louder than some Crummett records on paper, but the clipping/distortion is so audible and distracting throughout every loud song. It sounds fantastic when things quiet down (Spirit of the Stairwell) and the clipping stops, though.

That Closure in Moscow record was near perfect to me, especially from a production standpoint. Disappointing that they never lived up to that album.

I like BSNs production in some regards

but the atmospheric parts felt less atmospheric to me because of the production. that hit me in the face when that album came out.

BSNs production was great, because i dont think people couldve handled another circa record that sounded exactly the same from a production standpoint. it was a breath of fresh air at the time, no matter what you think of it now.

I really have no ear for production issues but recently when I've listened to BSN it's just sounded like the vocals are pasted on top of the instrumental tracks, they don't seem to bed in organically with the band at all.

the vocals are definitely loud. I'll say that with respect to the above

I actually like the vocal clipping on BSN, is that weird?

BSN is so fucking loud and the clipping bothers the shit out of me. I also wish that album had more room the breathe. Everything is so compressed.

BSN definitely has massive clipping issues but crummett's records while maybe not as bad in that regard are soooo loud and lifeless, zero dynamics whatsoever. circa is a pretty dynamic band.

i dont think anyones talking specifically about the vocals clipping but the entire track hitting the red and noticeable digital distortion (the worst sounding kind of distortion) happening.

sound design on BSN is great. guitar tones and drums rock. the mastering is just so obviously a major label slop job

I thought distortion was deliberately done for a long time. What parts are most apparently not on purpose in BSN?
