It was a big mistake haha

I mean, the choruses on Deja are still pretty pop-punk. I don't think that comment was meant to be taken literally. Someone had a good post in this thread earlier about that too.

Yep, I've never really understood it at all. I don't think I've ever listened to a single record more than twice in one day, much less multiple consecutive days.

@teebs41 yeah I agree, but I get the point he is trying to make and I see what he means

@FTank right I see where this post is coming from, I just don't think that a lot of the chorus styles in early Thursday are THAT far off

Edit: didn't quote because on mobile / lazy

I guess, yeah, in the grand scheme of things they're not that far apart. I always considered Deja way more accessible than any Thursday release though.

I feel that if they didn't have that pop punk sounding snare on that record they would just feel like pop influenced choruses. but I know what you mean

Binge listening can definitely hurt the longevity of something but with his album and Manchester it was hard not do it haha

Tbh I think there are only two albums I've listened to more than ten times this year

I guess like i think Geoff sees Thursday sounding closer to albums like Stage Four and Is Survived By, when I think Thursday's sound is closer to TD&G, Deja, Daisy... But I'm not saying Thursday sounds like those brand new albums

Yeah, I think they're closer to BN than Touché

i love that the man that says "And we sing this morning that wonderful and grand ol' message and I don't know about you but I never get tired of it" in "In The Water" actually does sound like hes tired of saying that. Like, the way its said in "Daisy" he sounds much cheerier and upbeat whereas here he sounds so over it, like he actually has gotten tired of it. Maybe thats the bands way of saying theyre tired of it all too.

I think Geoff was mostly referring to the Thursday albums that were out at that time, namely WATT which is by far the most aggressive Thursday release. Geoffs said that FC was like a post-hardcore pop record and he loves it for that so I dont think he meant it as a slight against Brand New, moreso that he had a kinda narrow way of viewing music when he was younger.

I've mentioned in the Brand New band thread for about a year now that I don't believe the 2018 thing. I think it's a marketing ploy. For a band that is really bad with keeping promises and sticking to deadlines/timelines, for them to come out in the summer of 2016 and say they're going to be done in 2018 is absurdly silly, in my opinion.

They're also bigger now TODAY than they ever were before.

Also, wasn't there a post on reddit (someone who predicted Science Fiction was about to drop) that had 'inside information' that said the 2000-2018 thing was a hoax and was just to get people excited about their two tours in 2016?

EDIT: This is not to say they'll remain totally active, touring every year, releasing an album every few years, etc. Just to say, I doubt 2018 is the last we ever see/hear from Brand New.

That'd be super lame if it were a marketing ploy.

There's no way Brand New would say it's the end as a marketing ploy to promote a tour. They've had no issues selling out tour after tour

Good point, cause also knowing how much he loves a band like The Hotelier, he obviously likes bands with pop sensibility at this point

I'm AWFUL about posting photos on here from my phone...but these were the reddit posts I was referring to from earlier in August about 2000-2018 thing being a marketing ploy.

I think I do too, but also wouldn't be surprised if they play more shows beyond 2018. I mean, they toured off Daisy for eight years. Maybe they'll really enjoy playing these new songs for more than 15 months...

I just think it's a silly statement/prediction to make two years in advance. They also probably didn't think they'd have a No. 1 album in the country when they made that statement. They also said their album was going to be released in 2016. They've said a lot of things.

Haven't listened to the podcast yet, and I don't have any interest in comparing Thursday to BN, but that quote you just pulled is one of the biggest reasons that album has lost its appeal to me as I've aged. I don't care for 90% of the choruses on that record anymore.

    I don't think it's a hoax. They'll definitely hang things up in 2018, but I don't believe that they'll never come back.

Agree with it being a view from his youth. I mean he did make that No Devotion album. I don't think he would deny that Stay had incredibly catchy and poppy chorus

I need to listen to the podcast with Geoff still, but perhaps Geoff is comparing Deja's chorus to Blink-182 in more of a lyrical fashion. I mean, it's not like Deja has the greatest lyrics. I know Tom DeLonge is a garbage lyricist, but there's absolutely some clunkers on Deja. Not to mention the hooks and sound. I think Deja is still very much a pop punk record that found the band just starting to mellow out a bit more.
