If they keep this up the Dems will continue to lose - GOP is more than willing to cater to and exploit the radical side of their base. Meanwhile the Dems live in this alternate reality where they can court "independents and siphon off disgruntled Republicans.

In reality there aren't as many independents as most think (usually people who have a party allegiance but like to sound open minded) and who is honestly switching sides at this point.
