Taylor Swift - Reputation (November 10, 2017) Album • Page 19

Discussion in 'Music Forum' started by iCarly Rae Jepsen, Aug 23, 2017.

  1. The reaction to the singles, by the online commentary, was negative. The "Shake it Out" thread was the exact same reaction as this song got. That's where I assume it came from. (Then the songs got popular and the commentary cooled because the song was a hit.)

Taylor is like two steps away from Connor4Real-ing it and putting the album in people's home appliances

I seem to remember the thread for "Shake it Off" being a lot more positive than this. Maybe I'm just projecting, because I loved that song right away and I'm on the fence with this one, but I feel like more people were on board with it.

I loved Shake it Off and We Are Never Getting Back Together straightaway.

So is every Taylor Swift lead single just gonna have some corny as fuck spoken word part that adds nothing to the song?

I dunno, the pacing of the way she sings this part is pretty exciting to me, just slightly twerked and different for mainstream pop that it sticks out

ooh look what you made me do
look what you made me do
look whatchu just made me do
look what you just made me do

I don't think people are saying those are bad songs, I'm not at least, I'm just saying that her last two lead singles, now this, have a ton of similarities in shock, reaction, and pop-levels

  9. The thread for the video was full of people hating the song in virtually the same language as this ... and calling her racist.

And the Papa Johns stuff went over very badly, even I mocked it:

Yeah, I've just been seeing quite a few comments that seem to be saying the last few have been bad

Forgot about the Papa Johns thing. Oh man, that was bad.

Was that the homepage thread? I guess I was just in the artist or album thread, where the reaction was definitely more positive. I do remember there being backlash over the video though.

  12. To be fair, it tastes the exact same as her UPS promotion.

I remember the news thread being pretty harsh. I don't remember the music threads much, I didn't like her at the time, it wasn't until 1989 that I got "it" and really liked what she was doing. But I do remember negativity around "Shake it Off" and going "full pop" and all that. The lead for Grantland kinda nails what the reaction was:
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the official theme song of Pumpkin Spice Latte season: Taylor Swift’s new single “Shake it Off”! And just like a #PSL, “Shake It Off” is sugary, makes you hyper, and is already beloved of girls in yoga pants. I have a high tolerance for saccharine pop; this summer I have stanned for Becky G, Meghan Trainor, and candy princess Ariana Grande. But man, did “Shake It Off” leave me conflicted. I don’t hate it; I realize my expectations for Swift’s career path are both overly high and uselessly personal. It’s also impossible to be mean about this song without becoming one of the haters Swift is singing about. Far be it from me to decide whether Swift can shake it.

......it's "I'm Too Sexy", which ok fine. I personally hate that song, so I'm basically predisposed to hating this one as well.

Im going on the record loving all of her first singles aside from this one. I had to convince my wife to keep listening to "Shake it Off".

I actually saw Taylor Swift live when she only had her self titled out, had to be summer 2008?. She opened for Carrie Underwood at a country fest near my hometown. She was ok, but the only thing I remember from the show was her letting the crowd know how high each song charted before she played it. That always bothered me for some reason

Edit: Yea Summer of 2008, 4 months before Fearless. Only new song she even played was "Change"

no, I understand that song is used here, but it's the the same pacing or what I was trying to convey

I always thought "We Are Never Get Back Together" would have made a great Say Anything song

I guess I'm just confused is all. I don't find the "pacing" of the "I'm too sexy" chorus exciting...to each their own.
