The reason Trump hasn’t lost more ground for his widely panned response to the attack is probably that many of his supporters agree with some of the beliefs that led white supremacists to rally in Charlottesville in the first place. Asked what racial group they think faces the most discrimination in America, 45% of Trump voters say it’s white people followed by 17% for Native Americans with 16% picking African Americans, and 5% picking Latinos. Asked what religious group they think faces the most discrimination in America, 54% of Trump voters says it’s Christians followed by 22% for Muslims and 12% for Jews. There is a mindset among many Trump voters that it’s whites and Christians getting trampled on in America that makes it unlikely they would abandon Trump over his “both sides” rhetoric.

Love the dueling headlines of "Trump calls for 'unity'" and "White house preps paperwork to pardon Joe Arpaio"

It's quite clear his idea of "unity" is simply "all my critics need to shut up and unite behind me while I don't change"

anecdotally this is 100% true of the trump voters in my hometown/my family. Regular family dinner talk is discussing how white males are really at a disadvantage because they're "more likely to get accused of being sexist or racist".

  16. I just don't see how those specific voters are coming over to any economic populist message that is part of a platform that also talks about how uh, that is all bullshit and is grounded in reality. Gonna be a fun few years. :redanger:

Next time casually ask what they think is worse, "being accused of sexism or racism or being victim to it."

I know they draw a false equivalence between both groups, but I'm just curious.

"Well of course being a victim is, but it's just so hard to prove. You can ruin someone's life by accusing them of something they didn't do. Most of the time people are just trying to get ahead. It's all he said/she said" ... etc etc etc

I'm at a loss for conversation most of the time when I visit home these days, lol. I did all the arguing I could while I still lived with them, and for the most part it's like speaking to a brick wall. Honestly the whole situation is like a bad cartoon, my dad's a retired government worker and sits around yelling at Fox News all day. It's weird.

I just find mental gymnastics so fascinating sometimes. All those flips, twirls, and whirls and that landing... that landing tho.

Same. People with this kind of mindset are very entrenched in it, and especially in less populated areas where there's not much opposition to it. IMO the most effective way to address it is by educating the next generation - school & having left-leaning teachers who focused on critical thinking/analysis was how I learned to not be a piece of shit, haha.

In my experience asking this question, it usually leads to them saying they are also the most likely victims of those things.

They'll cite how often they are accused of racism and sexism as proof that people treat white men unfairly. They'll say people are actually more racist and sexist toward them.

They'll do this and it'll work because people in those environments have essentially zero understanding of race in this country. They've spent their whole lives avoiding the conversation, so how could they know anything now? It's a frustrating convo to have because it's like you're talking about two entirely different subjects when you talk to a Southerner about race.

I love the train of through that goes from risk of most likely being accused or racism and sexism to most vulnerable to racism and sexism... just... beautiful. *kisses fingers like an Italian chef* Beautiful work of ignorance.

The people that are largely responsible for Trump and are fueling the fascistic base wouldn't have been won by an economically populist message in the first place, because they're middle or upper middle class. There are, of course, poor racist whites, but I think some of them can be won by a populist message. One can understand why they're drawn to Trumpism, because much of the engagement with class has been emptied out of identity politics and class is a defining aspect of how various communities identities is expressed. That being said, if the point is to get people on board to push a left agenda, there needs to be a focus on both voting laws and the large swath of Americans who just don't vote.
