What can you say about "the month in music" when your favorite band surprise-releases their first album in 8 years? It would be too difficult for me to distill what Brand New means to me here, but suffice it to say that I'm one of the "cured kids" that Jesse sings about on the album's second track. The fact that Science Fiction came out on August 17th was surprise enough; that it somehow surpassed my (and most other fans') hard-won expectations is a minor miracle. It's easily my favorite album of the year by a wide margin, one that I've pored over for hours and yet still feel like I haven't scratched the surface of this deep Atlantic trench of music.

When you're repeating the same hour-long album multiple times a day, it's amazing that anything else could even break through the noise. It's a testament to both The War on Drugs' and Los Colognes' albums that I spent so much time with them, as the two bands put out late-summer masterpieces that served as the daytime complements to Brand New's latest rock opus. The War on Drugs' A Deeper Understanding is an hour-plus epic of perfectly interlaced rock, finding an inescapable groove and adding washes of synth and guitar to create an emotional climb that peaks with truly amazing moments. Yet at least I was anticipating that record; Los Colognes' The Wave came out of absolutely nowhere and I would recommend it to anyone looking to capture that last second of summer.

Perhaps the most inspiring thing about the wealth of music that's come out this month is how it shows that there's still so much to look forward to this year. Julien Baker and Noah Gundersen both put out heartbreakingly great tracks from their forthcoming albums, which were already my most-anticipated of the year. I'm sad that summer's over, but can't wait to see what musical surprises Fall 2017 will bring.
