I think passionate fans are awesome and I'm so glad their music helps ppl but I'm just a very casual fan. Like total sucky fan who likes a few songs off that album with the astronaut thing. Their live show didn't grab me either but I do think a lot of that was the crowd because I don't remember the band sounding off or anything.

 

i've never really associated ramones w/ nazis because of their lyrics which i guess in hindsight is weird - but also tommy and joey were both jewish (tommy's parents were hungarian holocaust survivors/he was from hungary..) so i think that changes the way to be critical about it than if it was non-jewish people who were writing the music (not saying it's not bad that they wrote that stuff just that it's complicated and i think in my head until now i've never made an association = nazi because of their being jewish)...but regardless yes fuck nazis haha

EDIT: looking into this a lot more because i honestly didn't know much about the ramones other than they're from forest hills (very jewish nyc neighborhood close to where i grew up) and it was pretty surprising to me. and johnny ramone was definitely a fucking asshole, this article i came across when doing some googling about this has interesting tidbits about the band and it makes me feel pretty bad for tommy (though this source is some weird website called postmodern conservative so idk about that lol), it's surprisingly hard on my first go to find any critical analysis of the band's connections with both judaism and nazi imagery

sure, i don't think they were literal nazis nor that everyone in the band was ok with it - but i think, especially given punk's unfortunate skinhead subculture it was extremely irresponsible and stupid and their music isn't good enough to justify that for me. i think today that perspective is a lot more prescient than it might have seemed in the 70s - see PewDiePie making Nazi jokes or the use of memes in mobilizing white supremacists - but even if they were just stupid kids trying to be edgy, it still sours it for me

Hmm dont know if anyone posted this yet, but theres too many pages to go through. The Smashing Pumpkins are horrible. Bullet With Butterfly Wings comes on during my commute almost every day and it makes me so mad haha. Yuck

I played Mellon Collie like last week, great album still holds up

No comment on later work or side projects but wow what a great album

I like some of it, a couple songs quite a bit. But I think their last few releases were better and it's not the heaven sent gift everyone says it is lol
