It's weird to me how a Brand New thread won't let you like a Brand New album.

Thank for 4 clarifying I would've lost sleep trying 2 figure out which part you liked  u rock
sure of course but it's still odd to me. Like, obviously it's all subjective but I think the reason a lot of us bring this up with you is to try and discern WHY you think this is better. It's like if someone said Pablo Honey or The Bends was their favorite Radiohead album. I'd be puzzled by that, it seems contrarian for the sake of it (I'm not saying you're doing that or anything btw I've reach my "being called slurs in a Brand New thread" limit for the week so ya) but for me it's such a clear step down. Nothing wrong with that, all songwriters start somewhere, but YFW is just so childish in what it sets out to do and aside from maybe 2 or 3 songs I don't quite understand how anyone could enjoy them aside from a nostalgic attachment

Ha, so after just skimming through some Facebook comments it is clear that I am FAR from the only one having issues with this album playing on Spotify. Hopefully it gets resolved sometime soon.

(Also I know it's probably aggravating to see me post about it like 5 times today but this is legitimately a nuisance for both me and my girlfriend and I need to vent lol)

    hmmm

After listening to this solidly for three days, the only criticism I can currently think of is that I wish a couple of the interludes were turned into full length songs.

My biggest criticism is that the album ends

Like I said before I'm a huge Pop Punk fan.

I love the sound of the album, I love the lyrics of the album, I love the structure of the album. The lyrics are fun, which helps a lot. People don't always want to be listening to heavy lyrics all the time. People have a misconception that an album has to be out of this world technical to be a good album. Albums/songs can be simple and fun and be good. Some good examples are "One Dance" by Drake and any Taylor Swift song. They might not be the most technical songs but they are super fun to listen to, to sing a long to, and very enjoyable. That's what Your Favorite Weapon is.

I also don't have any nostaglia when it comes to Your Favorite Weapon. I explained before that I didn't even know who Brand new was until DAG and didn't even start listening to them until a couple years later.

So far the ones that are sticking with me the most are Lit Me Up, Could Never Be Heaven, Same Logic/Teeth, Desert, and Batter Up.

I'm not the biggest fan of Out of Mana or 451. I don't dislike them, but they're def the ones I like the least so far. 137 I like a lot but also am not sure if it'll have the same replay value for me as a bunch of the others do.

The bends could be someone's favorite radiohead album without it being embarrassing lol, it's not a great pick but it's defensible

Pop punk has an awful lot of bullshit but man it is funny as hell to me the pride some take in hating it here, the vestiges of the world's once premier blink 182 fan site.

I really wasn't planning on giving an opinion on YFW but it keeps coming back so I'll say this: I think Soco is a great song on a bad album. That's my take and I'm sticking to it.

    forbidden chalice.

I had a similar issue. If you originally had the local files transferred onto Spotify, you need to go into your Settings and remove the local file folder/the songs. After you do that, uninstall/reinstall Spotify! That's how I got it to work.

    Meet me in Montauk

This may be slightly cheesy, but when I first heard that this album was called Science Fiction, all I could imagine was possible movies or shows that could've inspired this album. I remember in an interview with Kid Cudi where he said that Close Encounters of the Third Kind played in the background on silent while he recorded Man on the Moon: End of Day - so I imagined that Science Fiction was also deeply inspired by a wide variety of sci-fi flicks, shows, or books. Anyway, I made a quick list of the album's songs and possible inspirations for them.

Lit Me Up - Blade Runner

    - As an album opener (albeit probably my favorite BN album opener), I think this song perfectly sets the tone for the album. On top of that, it really reminds me of Blade Runner. The idea that replicants are hunted by humans like witches; that despite their best intentions they still want to live through the life given to them by a creator that wants to take it away. I think it sounds like the score to Blade Runner as well. If the instrumental was thrown in as an OST for the movie, I wouldn't have blinked.

Can't Get It Out - Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind

    - This song is definitely one where the auditory aesthetic of the song matches the visual aesthetic of the movie. It's a bit of a stretch to say that these two line up thematically, but I do find the Pinkerton-esque vibe at the beginning of the song really reminds me of Jon Brion's score from the film.

    Waste - Snowpiercer

    - Does of the good of the present rely on the bad of the past? Perhaps the idea of prosperity is predicated on the need of suffering.

Could Never Be Heaven - The Fountain

    - Thematically, this may not be a perfect fit either. But in terms of tone and mood, it instantly reminded me of this song. Those who have seen the movie - the future timeline where he is with the tree heading to Xibalba - reminds me of the chorus, vice versa.

Same Logic/Teeth - Cronenberg (Videodrome, The Fly, Scanners)

    - This song sounds like organized chaos to me, and it feels like a horror movie to me. But body horror. Self-harm. Much like my example for Waste, for progress to occur - perhaps suffering is a necessity.

    137 - Akira

    - I don't really want to explain this one in too much detail. I think you could pretty much figure it out for yourself if you've ever watched Akira. The parallels are there with Nagasaki and the bomb dropped in 1988 by Japan itself in the film. "It doesn't matter which side you're on."

    Desert - X-Files S04E02

    - "Last night I heard a voice that said this is the end. All my nerves have been worn to the thread. I only have one or two left. I got my faith, I got my family. I got a wire fence around my whole stake. If I believe only half what I read, I got a reason to be dug in deep" If you've never seen X-Files, but you want a good horrifying watch - this is a seminal episode in the X-Files catalogue.

    451 - Fahrenheit 451

    - I think this comparison is quite obvious. Collective thinking vs intellectual freedom - does the need for survival within the confines of mundanity ultimately outweigh the potential for individual or societal progress?

    Batter Up - 2001: A Space Odyssey

    - This one feels like a magnum opus. 2001 is slowing moving, yet visceral. It may not have a lot similarities, but I could imagine the visual aesthetic from Kubrick's masterpiece served as inspiration for a song like this. The name "Batter Up" actually reminds me of the specific cut where the ape throws the bone into the air and it cuts to the future of the spaceship drifting.

Ummm The Bends can for sure be a number 1 Radiohead album, that's not even debateable. It's 100% a viable option.

The Bends/OKC/Kid A/In Rainbows are all basically interchangeable. Maybe even argue to throw in Amnesiac if thats your thing. Not me though.

It's better than TKOL, that's for sure. But this isn't a Radiohead thread and I don't wanna derail. I've already ranked their albums in the proper thread
