I may switch the top two but for the most part, correct.

  3. haha my list is slightly bull-crappy. I haven't heard Daisy since 2009 and I'd really need to sit with SF for a while alongside revisiting TDAG and Deja before knowing where they all land for me. I just started listening to those two albums in 2015, so they're kinda equal in my book. (Not that listening to them at the same time is causation for equality, but more or less correlation with equality.)

    TDAG
    Daisy
    Science Fiction
    Deja

With pretty big gaps in between each one. I've only listened to the new one once though so I'm expecting/hoping to like it more with more listens. Still haven't listened to YFW and don't really feel any urge to.

I honestly don't think I've ever listened to YFW in full. I know Jude Law, Mix Tape, Soco, and Seventy Times 7. Feels like enough for me.

Can't say where SciFi ranks yet.

I mean this super not antagonistically, but I'm surprised someone with an MCS av is so anti YFW. Seems like most of the hate comes from the all pop punk is bad crowd, which I gather is not a club you're a member of.

I've already ranked BN in this thread so I will sit this one out other than to say Deja 4 life.

I actually might like Deja the best now that I'm listening to it. TDAG is probably their "best" though. YFW is a fun album and is completely bolstered by nostalgia

MCS are what pop punk could be if it was good.

I tried Deja again today and I still don't like it other than like 2/3 songs.

Yeah, they clearly grew a lot as musicians in between those two, so I get where the TDAG is best sentiment comes from for the most part. But to me the songs on Deja, while simpler in execution, are for the most part more enjoyable across the board. That run of Quiet Things, Boy, Jaws Theme is pretty much perfect in my book, and there's not much on the album that dips below that standard to me.

Also I'm not huge on the vibe of anything post demos - I tolerate the dark, super serious vibe because I like the band, but I really don't dig too many other bands that sound like modern Brand New. But well written, catchy pop rock with a little bit of intelligence is my fucking kryptonite.

I was having a similar conversation this morning with a friend who asked if I listened to the Neck Deep album. I do love pop punk, and don't think there's anything wrong with it.
On Brand New specifically, there's a couple things at play for me.
I never listened to Brand New until a while after Daisy came out though. I honestly don't remember the order I approached their albums. I think I started with Deja and Devil and God. The point is, by my introduction to the band, they had already gone on to become this incredibly deep, moody, hard hitting band. By the time I heard anything from YFW, it just did not sound like the band that I had come to love. YFW is such an outlier in their sound, it's not even truly comparable to me. That doesn't mean it's a bad album, but it's just a pop-punk album to me. Nothing special about it really, other than some fun sing-a-longs, and there are pop-punk bands I already listen to that I go to for that. So it really just comes down to the fact that YFW is not the style of music I go to Brand New for, and the quality of the material that came after completely eclipsed it for me.

On a broader scale, no not all pop-punk is bad, but there are multiple kinds of it. The way I described it to my friend this morning is that I like my pop-punk with a side of emo or indie. Bands like Neck Deep, Knuckle Puck, Real Friends, etc. have just become so stale to me. I've heard it all before, most the time from those bands themselves. It's boring and derivative to me, and flooded in cliches with little actual substance to the lyrics. I also recognize that I probably would've liked them myself 5 or so years ago, so I do get it, and I wouldn't put someone down for liking that (unless the members are shitty people like Neck Deep & Moose Blood).

Bands like Motion City Soundtrack showed me that you can take a basis in pop punk and still find ways to make fascinating, thoughtful, and diverse music. I love pop punk in the style of Modern Baseball, the Wonder Years, the Menzingers, You Blew It!, Pup, the Maine, FIDLAR, and a ton of others.

The short version: I basically think the reason YFW would be held in high regard (like many pop-punk albums from that time) is nostalgia attached to it. I'm still over here loving the hell out of Put Up or Shut Up 11 years later, even though it has pretty much all of the qualities I complain about above, because of how much it meant to me at the time. I don't have that with YFW, so to me it's just a run of the mill pop punk album.

Sorry that got so long, and hope it didn't come across condescending. Just something I've been thinking about lately already. Carry on with your rankings.

Yeah, that all makes sense to me. I'm hardly a big pop punk fan anymore, but reading the brand new threads a lot the last week it just struck me how much some wear their hate of YFW (and even Deja) as a badge of honor, so I was interested in your opinion having not really given it much of a go despite liking a band that holds a similar spot in my music appreciation history.

All good. It kind of is just a pop punk album, but its moments of transcending that (and like you said, a heavy dose of nostalgia) keep it relevant to me.

I first heard YFW in 2013 and since I didn't really have any nostalgia for it I only liked 6 songs. Still remains that way as a few of the deeper cuts just blend together to me
