I thought he did okay. If someone told me he was going to complete over 70% of his passes tonight, I would've laughed...he got into an early rhythm and Jalin Marshall killed it with a horrible drop.

Morton is definitely protecting him with the play calling. Hopefully he continues to open it up a bit more with him going forward.

 

I felt like he was really inconsistent with his mechanics but I felt like he knew the plays pretty well so he got to his targets most of the time and of course his accuracy could be better. He missed a guy badly deep and threw it to the sideline. Maybe this performance will give him confidence, mental has to be one of biggest things for him right now. If he keeps it up, I'd guess they'd get deeper into the playbook of well... preseason.

 

Texted the exact same thing to my Dad. Jets looked good, but the 0-16 Lions also went undefeated in Pre-Season.

Hackenberg looked ok, but they kept it really safe with him. Definitely a confidence builder game for him. Right now looks like McCown is going to get the start - which kind of scares me. Was hoping the Jets would commit to the tank, but McCown might just be competent enough for 4-12 or 5-11.

 

McCown is 2-20 as a starter in the last five years...

 

Funniest thing would be, the jets fall right outside getting a qb and they have to debate whether to trade a ton to get one or pass on qb and hope the next year is better. That's gotta suck

 

The bears games don't count there, I'm guessing?

McCown has to be the starter if the Jets want to tank. Hackenberg is bad but he's young and literally playing for his career right now. McCown is shit, knows he is shit, and is in fact employed to be shit. I don't think McCown will win the Jets a single game. Hackenberg will at least try. Which frankly, would be HILARIOUS.

 

McCown is probably gonna be the head coach next year cause that's the jets

Also hackenberg will at least play like 5-6 games

He's really still an unknown in the NFL at this point. Without drops last night, he would've completed 80% of his passes. He showed a lot of progress.

I think it's unfair to say he's playing for his career when he just turned 22. From everything I can tell, he's doing everything right to prepare for this. He just needs to build on that with each week.

I don't think he'll ever be more than an average at best starter, but writing him off this quickly is just reactionary. A lot of the shit that has come out about his struggles is from Connor Hughes, who is a mouth-breather that knows absolute dick about football.

 

I'm not writing him off at all. He won't be out of the NFL or anything. But he'll likely never be a starter for more than two seasons if he doesn't prove himself here. Otherwise, the Jets take a QB and keep Hackenberg on the bench for the next two seasons. I'm not saying he can or can't, I'm just calling the situation that he appears to be in. He needs to prove that the Jets don't need to invest heavily in a QB this year.

 

See, the thing is... if hackenberg doesn't play most of the season

How can you know for sure you want to replace him when you get a top 3 pick next year? He could stun us and play really well and then you can trade down and equip that team with better pieces. And if he sucks then you know you definitely need one. You just have to know the answer.
