I'm not quite sure they have ever wanted to, or do fit into any specific genre. They've got "emo" (hate the term, I just think of awful hair cuts, psuedo goth wrist cutting kids), folk, rock, indie rock, alternative etc. influences. They change each album and hell, even change mid album (minus Cope and Hope). This last album in particular I think would be the hardest to pin down.

You shouldn't hate the term just bc it's associated with things that it definitely isn't

I would suggest checking out the emo thread on the site to learn more about what the genre actually is

Yeah emo is good now, you just have to call it emo revival.

I'm not sure anyone else saw this, haha. "The Grocery" is still my fave, I don't care what any of you say.

And yes, I'd be down for starting with ILAVLAC, but the band thread is probably best for that.

Discussion gets bad when people say they don't like emo and immediately bring up wrist cutting

When that's what the media brings up I don't blame people for thinking that way, it's up to us to educate!

Maybe there is a difference in vernacular between music genre and general public perception?

I was never in the music scene really and so the only time I ever heard the word was to reference what I mentioned.

The only other time I have heard the term outside of these threads and music was in high school or middle school to reference people who would wear black, straighten and dye their hair, and self harm.

It seems like this term used to be an 80s punk music genre?

I'm sure you meant no harm by it. Just need to be cognizant of people who do/have self harmed. Depression/Suicidal thoughts and actions are not something to speak casually about. It's all good though.

Yeah, sorry if I was rude about my distaste for the self harm associations. Not to say that it didn't happen or that it should be trivialized by being brushed off, but the genre has often been the subject of misconception through the usual taking something that happens to have a big teenage fanbase and finding stuff to make the term a pejorative. It's cool you looked into it even a little after saying that, too

  15. I mean the first two records fit in well with that scene. they don't really anymore but like I always thought ILAVLAC had a lot of Get Up Kids vibes which may just be me

I'm not sure someone understands the game....Where Have You Been? has a vote in the first round...

you're supposed to vote for your least favorite. it's an elimination!

Or maybe someone just really doesn't like it!
