Samiam put out a great record two decades into their career. The last Alkaline Trio record had them sounding revitalized. Same with the new Descendents.

I never made any argument about what they want to do, just pointing out the reality that pop punk is targeted to a younger demographic, or to an older demographic based on nostalgia. Someone like you isn't going to get into like a neck deep or whatever the hot young kids band is these days because they're targeted a young audience, even tho younger you would probably be way into them. There are also tons of bands, old and new, targeted a demographic of older fans nostalgic for a specific sound they liked growing up.

So you have first wave nostalgia acts: "that band I loved in high school is doing a reunion tour!"

Second wave nostalgia: "that guy from that band I liked has a more serious new side project it's actually really good"

And third wave nostalgia: "you gotta check this new band, they sound like pop punk but for people who aren't in high school anymore like us"

All targeting different people. You aren't going to like the really pop punk sounding stuff coming out now, they're aiming for kids and have music videos set in high schools and shit like that

I thought the last Descendents album was good. Came out when Milo was 53.

Also I didn't listen to the Menzingers very much until the start of this year (so when I was 22). I think they make genuinely great music, and it's definitely pop punk.

i do not believe that it is impossible to show an adult who never listened to pop punk a new band that plays pop punk and have them like it

That also sounds like a very specific sect of pop punk you're talking about, essentially either bands that sound like NFG or early Saves the Day.

If this was solid punk record that was better than any of their previous punk records, I think the peak would be way way low

A quote from you: "Older people still into new pop punk bands need to grow up like all the songs they listen to keep saying before they become creepy lifers who only try to appeal to the high school crowd."

You literally said they needed to stop doing this.

I get what you're getting at. You're right: I'll never love Knuckle Puck even though I probably would've if they were around when I was in high school. I also probably would not be very into a lot of bands I like if I listened to them for the first time this year.

I'd argue that TDB is Against Me's best album, and Axl Rose holds up pretty well.

you're phrasing this in a way that's impossible to say otherwise, how many people who would have any interest in any form of guitar based, fast music wouldn't have listened to pop punk at all growing up? like, i know people who didn't grow up on that sort of stuff that like japandroids and cloud nothings and stuff but that argument wouldn't even work because i'm sure they liked a blink 182 song when they were 12 or so

My quote is referring to fans, I never made an argument against bands playing that kind of music

I will totally eat into semantics all day this is The perfect thread for it my ratios are terrible and I'm digging deeper

Gotcha, but it is baffling that the gap between early 2000s and now is exactly the same as Dazed vs. the period it's set in

I suppose I find it odd how many people 20+ are so into the new blink record to the point of arguing that nostalgia isn't a factor and actively shitting on their older work
