I'm both of those things and there just isn't enough time to watch everything that i want to and it stresses me out more than it should

Hi, I get super passionate about writing because I'm writing one standalone fantasy novel and the world building is terrifying to me and I feel like I'm constantly failing so I'm all about praising people nailing it in any capacity

But NieR also isn't as successful as the MCU obviously so point still taken

That's the thing, they are wildly different narratives that are suddenly connected. Their stories largely exist in a vacuum with maybe an Infinity Stone or nod to villain x thrown in, and then Nick Fury or Tony Stark show up in the credits and are like "there's this other thing now come with me". The movies don't feel all that interconnected until the one part of the movie where they need to remind you Avengers 4 is a thing. Homecoming and the upcoming Thor movie are the exceptions.

As a casual fan, I've never watched any of the Netflix shows or Agents of SHIELD. I think it's cool that there is a huge universe but calling it the most ambitious narrative concept in the history of cinema feels off

I know next to nothing about video games because I've pretty much always been too poor for them, but I trust you.

I'm feeling off today and not sure if it's because I quit taking Lexapro last week (uhh wasn't meeting my particular needs) or because of tangible everyday stressors

The Drakengard/NieR franchise spans over 11k years I believe, and has 4 games, multiple books, and 2 stage plays. Something like that haha, but all interconnected

Quitting Lexapro is tough so that's probably part of it, you're close to the end of the adjustment though

That's exactly how Sanderson handles the Cosmere (my current nerd obsession), so that doesn't bother me as much but I do get the criticism of it seemingly thrown together. I do think that's on purpose, though. It allows each franchise within the larger MCU to sort of stand on its own.

If you are into serialized television moreso than movies, watch Daredevil and Jessica Jones. They're damn fantastic and pretty different from what you normally see in the MCU.

On that note, I am really excited with what M. Night Shyamalan is gearing up for with the Unbreakable-verse. It's exciting to have a world like that and to have it not be based in years of well-known source material.

I think certain standalone cinema projects are definitely more ambitious in story telling than the MCU as a whole--The Matrix immediately comes to mind. Star Wars qualifies, too, but it's far more streamlined in approach until Rogue 1. But the sheer scope of the MCU I guess with a relative high quality (in entertainment value, if nothing else) delivery across the board is ambitious to me as well.

    I'll stop rambling now.

Yes! I need to watch Unbreakable again. I watched Split back in May and haven't seen Unbreakable since I was 12 or 13. I love risks. Even when they fail. I want to reward them. We need more risky, unique storytelling. I just don't know that I trust Shyamalan after so many misses, haha.

I also believe that sometimes, we need less risky tent poles to pave the way. Though, some risky endeavors are just too great and immediately stand on their own. It's a shame that money drives art, but I also totally get it.

I'm definitely with you on that. I just wish the movies as standalone movies were a bit more unique, if that makes sense. There are exceptions to the rule of course, but it definitely feels like there's a rule in place.

Absolutely. And the need to present them all as equal heroes in strength/battle abilities is one complaint I sometimes have--even though those battles ARE fun (like the airport scene in Civil War). The best moments are like when Hawkeye is like "I shoot a bow and arrow" while everyone else is somehow negating each other's powers and aliens are flying around. Like, gimme that stuff.

Hey @Garrett L., you know what would probably lend some inspiration to your fantasy writing?

    Dungeons and muthafuckin' Dragons

Speaking of risky endeavors, I wish Whedon would explore the Cabin in the Woods universe a bit more. What a fantastic, fun film.
