    in addition to a plethora of other music books, i ordered Rap Yearbook, Ego Trip's Book of Rap Lists and Can't Stop Won't Stop today. all three are gonna be great reads, but man, i'm so excited by those first two, i think their format/layout will be so up my alley.

    Almost grabbed Big Payback, but as a trivia guy, a yearbook and a book of lists couldn't really be any more appealing lol

    Can't read them all at once anyway, but keep The Big Payback in mind. Also if you want to go deep I have more recommendations, haha. Like right now I'm reading this:

    @Cody

    This one is also great and insightful. It looks at how hip hop changed broader mainstream society in general and how it influenced millennials in particular, in the US and the western world:

    Haha, nice. Someone once tried to tell me it was created in Brazil. France has at least had one of the earliest serious European hip hop scenes.

    I'm more into German, Swiss, Austrian and Dutch hip hop because I speak the languages, but I do enjoy some French rap despite the language barrier. I'll look them up tomorrow and get back to you. I assume there is a lot of solid lists out there too though, it's a very big scene.

    @StepsInADance

    Like I said, I'm not an expert because I never paid too much attention to it because of the language barrier. I do however have friends that are into it and French rap is very popular in Switzerland and Germany, so I'm at least familiar with a lot of stuff through that. That being said, here we go:

    My favorite French rap album is "L'École du Micro d'Argent" by IAM
    , from 1998. It's also one of the more famous French rap albums outside of France and is commonly considered to be a classic. It also features some American rappers so you'll at least understand some verses. IAM could be described as the French Wu-Tang Clan, although comparisons like that are always reductive.

    A song from that album that I love, with video:

    The album

    Here is an okay list with some of historically important French rappers: The Best Of French Hip-Hop

    As is the case with every rap scene, current French rap is dominated by trap-leaning sounds. There is also a lot of stuff with African, Arabic and Caribbean sounds (Arabic and Turkish influences are also big thing in German and Dutch hip hop and Dutch hip hop also has a lot of Caribbean influences). Of course, like in every hip hop scene there is also a more underground, throwback scene to be found if you go look for it.

    This is a compilation video with snippets of 20 French rap songs that are currently popular (or have been in March), which is maybe a good starting point if you want to do some digging:

    This list seems fine: The 5 Best Upcoming French Rappers | Highsnobiety

    A songs that was very popular among my friends in college (which included several French speaking Africans, so I heard a lot of stuff through them) and a personal favorite of mine from a few years ago (with subtitles):

    And finally, a French R&B album that I love is Habib Kane's "Etat De Soul" from 2007. My favorite song off of that is "Un Monde Meilleur". I bought his album when I was visiting Paris with my girlfriend in 08 and we played it to death, haha. I can't find it on YouTube, but it is on Spotify over here so it might be on there wherever you live.

    EDIT: The French rap seen is huge by the way, in terms of releases and numbers. A lot of non-US rap scenes are very healthy even compared to the US scene, even though the American music press has a tendency to belittle them. For example, in 2016, four German rap albums have sold between 100K and 200K and two have sold between 200K and 500K. German rappers frequently do better numbers in German speaking countries (mainly) than many popular American rappers do in the US, even though the US is a significantly bigger market. In 2014 for example, German rapper Kollegah's "King" had the fourth biggest first week home market sales of any rap album in the world (160K), only behind albums by J. Cole, Nicki Minaj and Rick Ross, placing it above albums by, for example, Schoolboy Q and Pharrell. This year, a Dutch street rapper released his album in the same week as Ed Sheeran and charted above him, on #1. He has since broken local Spotify records. Last year, a Dutch rap group easily broke the record of longest running #1 song in the country. There are a lot of examples like this.

    If I'd believe in the concept of "bringing New York back", I'd say Twelvyy just did that. 12 is a hard New York rap album. It's good.
