I love Pathetic so much. As someone who jumped on the bandwagon after EOTS and heard Dude Ranch later after becoming used to the more polished sound, when I first put on DR and Pathetic came on it completely blew my mind. The speed and aggression. The more raw, shouty vocals. The Mark/Tom back and forth. Pure classic.

Pathetic is probably my choice for #1 blink song if you boil everything down to what I like about the band.

I can still remember sitting on the couch in my grandmom's living room and having my cousin's girlfriend at the time turn on MTV to blink playing at some spring break fest. First time I ever saw them, although my cousin did have Josie and Dammit on a mix CD. I remember listening to Dammit really low with my ear up to the speaker because I didn't want to get caught listening to a song that said "fuck". It actually must've been this video, putting me at 7 years old:

Immediately asked my parents if I could go out and get their albums. Remember I wasn't allowed to get Enema at first because of the cover, but she let me pick up Dude Ranch because there was a sticker over the bull's balls. I played that album to death. I think I also grabbed the M+M's import single and whatever copy of NOW had All the Small Things on it. Immediately became obsessed with the band as they blew up into heavy rotation on MTV. Then went back and got Cheshire and Buddha and added them into the rotation, along with Nimrod by Green Day. Was finally able to get Enema that Christmas, which blew my mind as well.

I guess I'm so hardcore for their earlier albums because they genuinely changed my life and how I listened to music. They were probably the first CDs that I cared about and took everywhere with me. Always had a CD player and my shitty booklet that carried about 12 albums in it. Had the blink albums in chronological order and would spin them every day. By the time TOYPAJ came out, I was well versed in every single song in blink's catalog (although skipping the super grating songs on the early two releases). I guess I played the newer albums out quickly, but never stopped returning to DR, Buddha and Cheshire Cat. They were the canon, and the post Enema releases were like additional content. I grew up with them, sure, but they are nowhere near engrained in my fabric as Dude Ranch was.

    EDIT:
I guess that's why I don't really view their catalog as "Mark songs" or "Tom songs" and never really saw people doing that until the breakup when Tom became an.......easy target. They were just blink, and they made songs that sounded like stuff I'd never heard before and I was 7 years old so I had no idea what a Voyeur was or what the song was about, so the melodies and guitar and drums were all mindblowing. I suppose getting into the album later, after their more polished work would make you reconsider how raw and clumsy a lot of their earlier stuff was but I really did not have any frame of reference or idea about what bands were supposed to do.

It's also interesting that I never really found them "funny". I mean the concept of running around naked or saying curse words was cool to me when I was under the age of 11 or so, but after that I was never really enamored by their sense of humor. I will say that the funniest thing blink has ever done is probably the First Date video, specifically:

Very similar to me, except my brother turned me on to Dude Ranch before Enema came out so I was so hyped for Enemas release. I remember taping What's My Age Again off the local radio station so I could listen to it over and over before the record released.

I also vividly remember listening to Cheshire Cat on my discman a bunch. Good times!

See, I feel like I don't remember any of the rollout for Enema aside from WMAA being played on MTV all the time. I remember walking around the schoolyard singing Aliens Exist with my friends though. What a bunch of dorks we were.

Nice post, thanks for sharing. I do agree that I think depending on when you got into the band it probably changes your views on them or what albums you favor more. I got into them when What's My Age Again started to get radio play in 1999 and once I got that CD I knew I had to have all of them so I listened to EOTS, DR, Cheshire Cat and Buddha a bunch just like you. I do find it hard for me to go back and listen to Buddha and Cheshire Cat now, maybe because the songs haven't aged well whether it's the production or I just like the production with Jerry Finn better. I almost never go back to those albums in full but still like a handful of those earlier songs like Carousel, M&M's, 21 Days, Toast and Bananas, Wasting Time to name a few. I'd much rather listen to Dude Ranch, EOTS, TOYPAJ or the Untitled album.

I agree before the break up it was never Mark songs vs. Tom songs, they were grouped together and you never really thought about that.
