A lot of his songs on Untitled? Some Enema and TOYPAJ stuff.

You want to fuck Dude Ranch. I get it. Nostalgia is powerful and a fine reason to prefer something over other things. But to pretend it's other reasons just comes across as weird.

 

Tom's songs on Dude Ranch are like Piccolo in the beginning Saiyan saga. Strong at first, but soon vastly overpowered by what comes later.

 

Lol I'm baffled about the immaturity when it comes to talking about this band. Well, considering the band I guess not. The lyrics on TOYPAJ are absolutely horrible, some of the worst in the band's career. The dudes were in their what, late 20s at that point writing lines about "hippie fucking scumbags"?

 

That is deep because it's about a Peeping Tom. His name IS Tom. Don't tell me your mind isn't blown

 

I'll take Tom's chorus on STFTK over I'm Sorry any day

 

I already addressed in a post above the weaker aspects of TOYPAJ. I specifically brought up GMOGR.

We agree on that one. You ignored my other examples. At this point you have brought nothing new to reply to. Cool.

 

I don't even know what the hell the chorus of STFTK means.

 

I'll be honest, most of Tom's output pre-Untitled doesn't do anything for me anymore. I'm definitely more of a Mark fan overall.

 

Disagree pretty strongly with that, I find it corny


Tom has never necessarily been the best lyricist, but as Jason said before I'd take the immature bratty but still emotionally resonant lyrics on their earlier albums over the faux-serious ones on the latter

While I'm at it, Adam's Song has horrible lyrics too

 

they always close with Dammit. did you leave and beat the traffic, or did you stay to beat your meat?

 

That's your opinion, I'm the opposite I guess.

 

What other examples? Untitled and the others on TOYPAJ? I'd have to go back and look at which songs are Tom's, but when I revisited TOYP last year the poor lyrics stuck out

Reckless Abandon, for instance, another example of a dude in basically his 30s writing songs about making fun of someone's mom.


On a song like Enthused there's corny lyrics like the "crack" line, but I find them much more personal/tied to real emotions rather than stringing together random images about being a young rebel.


Don't get me started on I Miss You.

I'd need to revisit it, but Boxcar might have some of Tom's best lyrics

Edit: I missed the post where you named song names. I don't entirely see what you're disagreeing with me about if we find faults in the same songs?

 

Well they encore closed with Dammit, I meant closing the regular set with Los Angeles.

They played a 5k venue instead of a normal 20k so not as much traffic to beat haha

 

What Went Wrong and Please Take Me Home are better than anything in DR from Tom.

I also pointed out Reckless Abandon as a weaker song. I said "some" of Enema and TOYPAJ. I certainly never said all of TOYPAJ holds up on Tom's lyrics.

Again, I said "a lot" of his Untitled stuff. Violence, Down, Always, and I'm Lost Without You are all solid Tom offerings. I can't take I Miss You seriously. Ever since Witmer Thomas joked about it, it's a funny song to me.

I was primarily thinking of Blink's work. But, BCR is very good.

All this to say, Tom has much better lyrics than what he brought to DR.

 

It's about his parents(who I'd presume were married/together 20 years) getting divorced.

 

Always is a great song, one of my favorites from the catalog, but those lyrics are so corny as well. I still can't help but get a detached vibe from a ton of their lyrics post Enema

 

I'm also ignoring the split vocals songs. I'm focusing on Tom "solo" songs.

 

Perhaps outshined was a poor choice of words on my part. I don't know if he was held back or he wasn't comfortable with the direction of the album at first or Tom just started to really want to take control of everything.

The Tom only songs on Neighborhoods (Ghost, Wishing Well, Even If She Falls) are better than the Mark only songs in my opinion. Although Tom does have two bad ones in Love is Dangerous and This is Home.

 

I'm not saying anything is corny or not corny. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I think it does in Always case.

 

And to be clear, my initial post was based off of the comment that Tom's songs on Dude Ranch are "unlistenable", which I find way more baffling than simply saying he was writing immature lyrics

 

Ah. Should have quoted that post then. It came across as a blanket statement and therefore rang incredibly untrue based on our discussion. I provided many songs that are better than his DR stuff.

But based on that particular point... I would say the only unlistenable song is Degenerate.

 

I think I was the one that said Tom's songs on Dude Ranch are 'unlistenable' so I'll jump in. In 2017 songs like Voyeur, Degenerate, Dick Lips and Boring are unlistenable to me. I just don't like them anymore, I never liked Boring. Yes they're immature and always have been. Unless I'm listening to the album straight through if they randomly come on I skip them hence why I said they are unlistenable. I like Untitled and Enthused, I'm Sorry is just kind of there for me, which is why my original post was that Mark carried that album.

 

All we do here is argue about who's opinion is better. It's hurting my head.....lets go back to ranking!
