Count me in on the 'you should know the new record of the band you paid money to see, particularly in a world of free online music' camp. People SHOULD be familiar with it.

Though I know that isn't the case all the time.

If that's who I keep hearing she's eerie as shit. The placement of those sounds are way too intense for me when I got headphones in really loud

Edit: was literally looking over my shoulder on the subway trying to figure out what was happening

I agree that it was a bad idea for TBS to do that (although me personally would have loved to see that) but these are 2 different bands/fan bases. I feel most TBS fans are stuck in the past clinging to their first 3 albums where MO's fan base is pretty consistent, and they're getting bigger with each record. I think most people see TBS as a nostalgia act (I don't)

Plus, MO is giving album downloads to anyone who buys a ticket. So there's no excuse to be unfamiliar with material if doing to the show.

eh. the whole point of touring behind the record is to get people to come see you and let them know you have a new record out. the record a bands touring behind should make up anywhere from 5-8 songs of the setlist, depending, but playing the whole thing front to back, from what i witnessed on the tbs tour, is a great way to kill momentum of the show very quickly. people will likely know the gold and probably the moth, but those are very early in the album. and even if people do hear the album, it takes time to become very familiar with an entire record and i get the feeling a good portion of their aging fan base just doesnt have that kind of time to dedicate to music anymore. obviously there are a lot of people especially on this site that will be very familiar with it, but its silly to expect everyone in the crowd to be on that level. like, people wanna see a band they like regardless if they know their new stuff, if they wanna give the band money but havent heard the new album yet god bless em. im just sayin, as i said i went to the tbs tour, i dont think thats a good idea.

Related: I saw MCS during their 'Dinosaur' tour. Someone asked me before the show if they'd released anything since 'Commit This To Memory.'

Like... how? You paid to go to the show. The tour is named after the album you're asking about. Also, that was two albums ago! You're not just behind, you're multiple records behind!

    It was stunning.

ehhhhh theres plenty of excuses, you cant expect everyone to dedicate the kind of time listening to music that we do. as long as theyre buying a ticket and giving the band idc if theyve heard the album prior to the show or not. and youd be surprised how many manchester fans are hanging on from the mean everything to nothing era but not that into simple math or cope.

some people just dont keep up with music as rabidly as you see on this site but still wanna go see bands they like or used to like. i dont keep up with movies at all but ima go see dunkirk and idk if chris nolan has done anything since the dark knight rises lol (was interestellar after that? never saw it). shrug.

I don't know if the front to back thing is a good idea or not. But seeing them on CBS last week and having seen them live, it sounds like two different bands entirely. Even just on the level of energy needed to pull off Mean Everything and Cope songs is a whole other animal. And at least when I've seen them, all of their music is heavier live than on record.

These songs don't seem like they'll be performed with the same intensity. Or, at least, lack of restraint. After all, this record was made by doing what comes the opposite of natural for the band - I just feel like it may be odd live with other stuff.

theyve always been way better live than on record and i like their records. but the cope era live shows were so much better than the album, and were what made me actually like those songs.

That's a fair point. But I'm not dropping $25 on a concert ticket for a band that I'm unaware has released two records in the multiple years since I've kept up. That's a level of disposable income I just don't have lol.

i think casual music fans dont go to as many concerts as people you find on sites like this. so they're more prone to go to concerts as a night out or event with a group of friends even if they arent intensely familiar with the band they're going to see, if they're somewhat familiar or were familiar earlier in life it makes no difference to them. like i said, totally fine and the band's getting money. it gets annoying when these kinds of fans show up to like, brand new concerts and just shout for YFW songs

Yes...but a thing isn't beautiful because it lasts

Surprised The Grocery isn't in your top 3, the 3 songs are super great that you already have listed tho, so no quarrel.

After an initial listen, my favorites are The Gold, The Alien/The Sunshine, and The Mistake. Really dig what they've done and also like the folky melodies going on. A review mentioned it was like if Fleet Foxes went cinematic and enormous, which is pretty accurate.

Definitely not crazy. I was listening through headphones the other night while my wife and kids were sleeping and had to pause and check the monitor at least twice to make sure they weren't crying (they weren't).

This album got me up some mountains on a foggy, chilly and rainy day in Vermont.

I listened to it all day.

    It's unreal.

We had some really bad storms in KC on Wednesday when I got this. It fit perfectly with the heaviest part of the storm and the stark calmness of the next day.

On a selfish level, I love when bands I love play a lot of new material, but I agree it's not a great idea from the bands standpoint. It's very easy for me to forget that people don't all consume music at a pace as quick as a lot of us do. I also forget for some bands that not everyone is there seeing them for the 4th, 5th, 6th or whatever time. Those people are going to want to see all he bands music, not just the newest.

The only band that easily comes to mind as an exception to this is the Maine, who are just a very unusual band in terms of how they and their fan base have grown.

But I also think think it can work for any band, but they should be up front about what is going to happen at the show. If i remember right taking back Sunday didn't originally announce they were doing this, and that's where it's kind of a weird move to pull on the people coming to see you.

A lot of that album runs together but broken up in a live set, especially top notch and cope, are really good
