    That sounds really boring.

    Maybe so, maybe not.

I imagine you're kidding (?), but I get this impression pretty frequently from moderating the subreddit and running the Archive. Blows my mind.

  8. A little late, but seriously, The Ugly Organ is a masterpiece. I used to listen to it a ton when it first came out. Over the last few years, it's collected dust on my shelf. A couple of weeks ago though, I randomly decided to blow the dust off of my CD and put it into the disc man that I used back in high school. I listened to straight through in my headphones while reading along in the lyric booklet, and it brought back SO MUCH nostalgia. The album still totally holds up.

That album has some absolutely stunning song peaks: Driftwood, Sierra, Art is Hard, Red Handed...so good.

It really does feel like some of those people don't listen to any other bands. For me it's weird that like every week on Reddit there's a new post asking for recs on bands that sound like brand new. Brand New sounds like Brand New and fills that need for me. I think a better thread would be "recommend me something that sounds nothing like Brand New that a Brand New fan might like."

It's really confusing to me. My problem is there's too much other music to catch up on and listen to.

*stares into the abyss of my 2017 Albums to Spin More Spotify playlist that is 1,000 songs and over 60 hours and begins to cry*

Luckily for me I have plenty of time in my space pod to listen to music. Planetary travel to conquer worlds is sometimes a long trip, and music in the space pod helps. If I only listened to one band those trips would be agonizing fast after the first trip. Which would be bad for the people of the planets i go to, Only thing worse than a Saiyan is a Saiyan in a foul mood

    Getting off topic but...

So, my thoughts—keep in mind I'm not done yet, but very close. Being a kid who grew up on Long Island forty minutes from the city and went to college at NYU starting in 2007, I love the idea of NYC as a character in the book. Gentrification, NYC pre and post-9/11, the grunge and lawlessness of LES, ABC and BK birthing so many incredible bands. I think Goodman nailed this aspect, primarily because she was so entrenched in it personally as it was happening.

My one caveat is the storytelling construction. I love the oral history format for longreads or deep dive articles, but it feels a bit whiplash-inducing here. I'm a huge fan of so many of these bands—particularly The Strokes—so I didn't have to keep flipping back to the listing in the front for context, but I imagine a lot of people who read it will have to. At times I found myself forgetting to even look at who was speaking what I was reading, and just trying to read through like it was a normal non-fiction book. That being said...I have no clue how this book would even be written if it wasn't in the oral history format. There is so much material and so much to cover, I don't even know how she would have been able to lay it out.

And again...give me the Long Island version. Hell, make it the Northeast punk/emo/hardcore.

PS: Open for any book recommendations like it.

Anyone have a favorite album artwork from them? I was talking about this with someone as to what we thought was the most recognizable/popular album cover from them. I think easily, Deja's space man is most recognizable and even light casual listeners would remember that that's Brand New. Though, TDAG seems to be their most praised and that album artwork is referenced and used for the band and memes more than any.

I think Deja is the most popular, but Daisy is my favorite artwork from them.
