Did you grow up lonesome and one of a kind? Were your records all you had to pass the time?

Had this song in my head all morning. I really miss this band.

I'd quite like a full Nebraska Bruce record. Not sure Waits can be replicated.

One of my favorite memories associated with any album is when I visited New York for the first time and American Slang just came out and I listened to it exclusively the whole time I was there. So it's totally an NY record for me. "If you're anywhere in Manhattan for the next 8 days or so..."

Re-read that Pitchfork review after listening to this. It really is rough.

  6. I did the same. It's so needlessly mean. And Dan makes a good point in the podcast that it's so personal toward Brian specifically. When Gaslight got bad reviews, it was always Brian in the hot seat.

Yeah, that review made me really not a fan of Ian Cohen.

That's not even a review, that's pretty much just a personal attack on Brian

It's extremely awful. Cohen isn't very good

On another note, this was an awesome interview. I've always enjoyed Ozzi's stuff. Plus, this still gives me hope that Gaslight is going to come back around. Thanks for sharing!

If I didn't already think that Ian Cohen was a total pretentious douchebag, I definitely would have after that review. Dan Ozzi is thumbs up though.

Yeah American Slang is the NYC album for sure - Sink or Swim and SATQ are the Jersey albums - and maybe a little of '59 Sound. Could also be that I saw them at Asbury Lanes during the SOS/SATQ era.

Doesn't get any more Jersey than We Came To Dance proving the existence of Central Jersey!

Late to this conversation, but I remember during the promo leadup to the album Brian specifically calling American Slang their New York record.

Also I relistened to songs from Get Hurt and Handwritten yesterday in my car ride and it really illuminated why I still can't get into their last album: the hit-to-miss ratio. Get Hurt starts off so well by introducing their new sound on "Stay Viscious", then has at least two top tier Gaslight songs in a row with "1000 Years" and the title track. But after that I couldn't find two songs in a row that I even wanted to listen to, and this is just a few years after the album was released. Then I threw on Handwritten intending on just listening to a couple songs and played it straight through (even "Desire") because that album rips pretty much front to back.

Also also whoever uploaded Gaslight's discography to Spotify needs to get their ish together. Sink or Swim isn't even there and they need to upload deluxe versions of the albums separate from the OG albums (or at least mark the extra songs as "[Bonus Track]" to distinguish from the rest of the album). It's severely messing with my OCD to see Handwritten end with "You Got Lucky" and (worst of all) "Have Mercy" ISN'T EVEN INCLUDED online. There's a cover of "Anywhere I Lay My Head" in its place on the Get Hurt Spotify album among the other bonus tracks.

    Okay. Good morning.

I have never been able to understand the adamance that some people have when insisting that there is no central Jersey. It's like, what do you get out of this, how does it matter to you? Very odd.

This sounds like it's going to be an album full of songs like Mojo Hand and I am absolutely here for it.

Hope this thing is out this year.

Man, I want to get into Brian's solo stuff more but I find that I'd rather want a new Gaslight record instead. Totally my opinion though, new stuff sounds cool.

5 years ago today Handwritten streamed for the first time. I fucking cherish that album still to this day.

I remember that day pretty well. It was the hottest day of the hottest summer I've experienced in my life, haha. I ripped the album and then took my iPod to the beach. Dove into the water to cool off, then lay on the sand as the sun went down and listened. One of my favorite first days with an album.
