That's how I get treated when watching sports and I don't know the answer to trivial questions. It's so fun.

 

When Gamer Gate happened I deleted so many dudes who clearly were looking for a spring board for their misogyny. Game culture is awful.

 

Can't imagine being that dude. Was at a Celtics game with a girl and was filling her in on our team because basketball's not her game, and like every two minutes I kept checking to make sure I wasn't doing that douche-y dude explaining thing. Haha.

 

What a neckbeard. Like seriously, fuck that guy. I've met people like that in gaming friend circles and it's honestly pathetically sad just how out of touch with reality those people are.

It totally is and things like Gamer Gate is proof of how the culture as a whole needs to change. Of course, it's not just the fans that make it toxic and shitty, the developers are to blame too.

Dude probably owns a trillbilly that he wears on the reg. You may say that I'm being hyperbolic but of all the stereotypes that hang around gaming/nerd culture, the one about the hats is INCREDIBLY accurate. I've seen so, so many dudes wear one with a novelty t-shirt and cargo shorts to the point that I'm convinced it's a uniform.

I don't know where I've seen it, but I pictured that way too easily. It's so popular, it's woven itself into my subconscious.

When you reflect on the amount of time you've spent around a culture, you tend to pick up on things you didn't really notice beforehand. Like that, the lack of personal hygiene among people, the sexism, it all becomes clear. Funny enough, it's often interchangeable with anime fandom too.

 

Make no mistake, I love gaming. It's been a part of my life since I was five and I'll be gaming until I die. However, I do acknowledge that there are many shitty aspects of the culture and if it's going to move past the point of being perceived as this childish, man boy hobby that it gets painted out to be, the culture as a whole is going to have to change and evolve in a more positive and inclusive direction.

 

I like doing things. I've never cared who likes doing things I like doing. It's weird when people care that other people like something as much as they do, like that threatens how much they can like it.

 

This was one of the hardest things to accept for me. That it doesn't matter if all the other fans of something are douches. That doesn't reflect on the thing itself. Hence why I like Dave Matthews. :flexes while the boos rain down upon him:

All the jobs Ive had have been customer service so I keep doing this to myself but right now it's my coworkers at both jobs that are dragging my outlook down more than patrons.
