I only got into this band within the past few years, mainly due to their off-the-charts popularity here. Never knew anything about them back during their prime.

I've grown to really like both Deja and Devil. The latter is certainly an impressive, well-written, atmospheric record. I confess to not quite understanding why they have this monstrous cult following almost on the level of Radiohead or Tool, but maybe it's a function of missing out on their best years.

Anyway, just thought I'd say that even as someone slightly perplexed at the degree of adulation these guys receive, I wouldn't really call Deja juvenile. It's a product of its era, for sure, but even as someone with little interest in "emo," the songwriting separates it quite cleanly from the pack there.

 

New material needs to arrive soon so we can stop having the same God-forsaken discography arguments in lu of a few blissful weeks.

Actually nope, the new LP would be pitted against it's siblings instantly without remorse.

inspiration doesn't always equal "sounds like," but fair point with your fact, yes now I do know there is connection at least

...and that being said, this whole discussion I have been thinking of Bright Eyes as a whole, a band with 10 albums under their belt, and not just "Bright Eyes before Deja came out." Thinking in that case I can get the influence more, the older/weirder Conor rather than the folky Conor from more recent times.

 

Yeah I just listened to that song and instantly heard the vibe. BN definitely have their own take on it but the darker chord progressions and vocal delivery seems pretty inspired by sad and angry Bright Eyes, amongst many other influences.

 

As someone who has been listening to both Bright Eyes and Brand New since 2002, It's never even crossed my mind that Deja sounded anything like Bright Eyes. Not to say the similarities aren't there, but I've just never connected the two. Bright Eyes, to me, just always seemed a tad more 'out there' and different than everything else being released around that time.

I guess now that we're having the discussion I can certainly hear influences.
