Going by common sense he was level with the last defender. It was a perfect example of "when too close to call, the striker gets the benefit of the doubt".

Linesman fucked up. Called offside because Vargas was ahead of the keeper. Forgetting that there were two Cameroon players ahead of his. VAR overturned the linesman.

He wasn't level. He was ahead of the last man.

If you believe the pundits over here, he's often mentioned as the best player in all of concacaf.

I already hear the snarky replies about concacaf coming.

Disagree very much so. They're all insane quality.

I've never seen world class be thrown around so loosely

maybe I missed what common agreement makes that definition stick to a player, but being a guaranteed starter on a top 15 international team and starting for a club consistently in the champions league seems like a reasonable bar in my head

I guess I consider world class to be the truly top tier, where they are one of the best few players in their position in the world, such as Aguero or Pogba. For instance I'd argue Arsenal only have two truly world class players, Ozil and Sanchez. Just because Rob Holding or Nacho Monreal start for us regularly, doesn't make them world class, just very good.

I remember years ago in this thread we discussed on multiple occasions what World Class meant.

I always had a looser definition. But I remember most felt it meant top 3-5 at their position.

I think those named players could only be considered world class on the basis that they play in a decent national side. None of them play for teams who are really at the top table or even in the strongest leagues (PSV and Porto between the three, I think).

By that measure, you could include some pretty underwhelming players as world class.

there's a possibility of it being reversed due to the inevitable riot that would happen if it's in belfast on those dates

That'd be solid, save for the potential riot, I'm gonna be in Glasgow that week, might get to a Europa league game too

mourinho being prosecuted for tax fraud, add him to the lengthy list of mendes clients to be investigated (ronaldo, coentrao, falcao, pepe, di maria, carvalho).

Man these top Spanish clubs sure do get up to some shady business dealings. All these players and manager being prosecuted for various tax issues, not to mention that all three of the top clubs have had transfers bans or been investigated for them.

I don't think it's really that surprising that there are tax issues around when 45% or more of their income is being taken from them. Kinda human nature to not want to lose half of something, legality aside, especially money.

i don't know the exact figures but i presume the tax rate is just as high if not higher in france, where i don't think they have as many issues.

I'd say outside of a few PSG players, no one in France is making the sort of money the big three in La Liga do. England's probably the best equivalent and I know their taxes are equal.

It always seems to come back to image rights, which must be on a different scale since they all seem to get pinged there.

45% tax isn't enough for the money these people make

  20. r u kidding. how do u expect ronaldo to live on only half of his 100m yearly earnings

I think most of the tax evasion stuff has been image rights related, has it not? I think they tend to set up offshore companies to take the image rights (since they come in from all over the world, presumably). I think in the case of Mascerano, he tried to argue he didn't even know what was going on, that his agent just suggested some idea and he let him get on with it.

Given how dirty football is, I could believe that the players don't really know what's happening and it's the hangers on in the background finding ways to make themselves a few extra £££. But then, maybe they're just greedy bastards too.

yeah it's all about image rights. they passed new regulation (tied to beckham law of 2005) that basically means that you as a player need to have a company and pay your image rights taxes through that, which leads to issues when the company is registered in offshore countries, etc.

All their image rights go through Ireland YEOW LOVE OUR GOVERNMENT

Remember Sunderland took Adam Johnson back and continued to play him even though he was charged with sexual activity with a minor and guild grooming lol. Fuck that club.

Didn't he blind side the club by telling them he was totally innocent and was going to fight and then as soon as he was on trial, pleaded guilty?
