Tina fey has always been an asshole. At first I tried to give the benefit of the doubt but I axed that plan long ago

  6. I'm guessing representation isn't as big of an issue there because Japanese faces on screen are the norm. I do think this isn't the first time I've seen the Japanese echo the sentiment that at least the story is getting out there to wider audiences.

I don't want this to sound argumentative or anything because I agree with the criticisms being made against the casting, also want to preface by saying I don't really know much about Ghost in the Shell, but would these criticisms be less warranted if this movie were pitched as an American adaptation akin to the U.S. versions of Oldboy or Godzilla or The Ring?

Those are more like the American versions of The Office.

Yeah ok, I get that. This is def a better context than the comparison I was drawing.

I still don't know why they didn't get Ken Watanabe to play the Ancient One. He was good in Batman Begins.

I think at one point he, Morgan Freeman, and some white guy were in the running (if the Internet is to be believed). If true, they really didn't care who played the character.

Morgan Freeman (while it would have been neat to see) doesn't make sense to me either. Doesn't this part of the movie take place somewhere in Asia?

I loved Ken in Inception (one of my favorite movies ever).

I guess it's that train wreck thing where curiosity momentarily gets the better of you and then you almost immediately remember why it is you don't read the comments anymore. I am once again grateful for the people here in this community. I mean...I don't think I even made it through ten comments. Honestly terrifying.

I watched the video in that link with the writer and think everyone who's taking part in this conversation should watch it. What he said doesn't excuse Marvel's decisions, and every time he said "social justice warrior," I cringed, but he did show that a lot of thought and other factors played into this decision. Though, I think one possible solution would have been to cast an Asian-American actor as Stephen Strange while still using Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One, which I'm sure was never discussed as a possibility.

I did not know the tidbit about the comic character Dazzler originally being based off Diana Ross before top execs made her white. Such a wasted opportunity to make an underrated character that much cooler.

Will not watch. Sounds like "I didn't just white wash one character, I white washed one whole culture!"

Kinda weird that part of what went into it was that they didn't want the film to look too much like Batman Begins. I'm not sure too many people would have associated the two like that.
