It's because Skiba's parts in San Diego are disingenuous right?

Yeah I mean Mark is singing about sitting in a parking lot listening to the cure with Tom and can't go back because of him who is Matt singing to?

  4. pretty much the whole entire album feels disingenuous to me... haha

And being a teenage Sattelite down a rabbit Hole and feeling like they don't care about you and wanting his wife to let him call her when he's sober??

I wanna go back to the days when Tom was so genuinely excited to finally get a date, you could hear in that song he was genuinely scared of becoming a 30 year old virgin

I'd make a joke about him genuinely thinking and telling his mom there's something in the back room, but knowing Tom now it probably is genuine

Once Mark left such overtly simplistic and cheesy teenage thematics behind for 15 years, it rings a bit more off to hear a song like "Kings of the Weekend" return to that well after three or four darker, more mature releases than it did to hear something like "Rock Show" or "First Date" on the album that followed up a record with "What's My Age Again", "Mutt", "Dysentery Gary", "the Party Song", etc.

Yeah they were a silly band for a long time but Mark's been writing about more mature or complex emotional stuff consistently since 2001-03, which is a longer period of time than they wrote about masturbating and high school from 94-01

Plus even when they were writing about high school Mark and Tom were never better than when they were earnest and emotional (Going Away to College, Apple Shampoo, Untitled the Dude Ranch song, Pathetic, Emo, Wendy Clear), when compared to their bratty, immature side (though I liked that stuff too, I'm just not into hearing it from 45 year olds)

Parking Lot - for Matt's verse and the bridge

Cynical - so, so tough, as they are two of my absolute favourites but the 'what's the point of saying sorry now' bit wins it for me.

Good Old Days - my favourite song from the deluxe album, really catchy and I actually think the lyrics arent too bad.

Last Train Home - not a fan of either song, but Los Angeles has dreadful production and I really hate Mark's vocal on it, he almost boards on to parody the way he sings it.

San Diego - great song and the bridge is my favourite bit on the album.

She's Out Of Her Mind - not a fan of the chorus but the verses are very nostalgic.

Cynical is more of an intro to me... don't mind me, I'm just over here being bitter that the best California song is going to lose in the quarterfinals.

Exactly. As I've said before, writing them off as always being a sophomoric band is ignorant. I can assume that the reason so many people gravitated towards blink is because of their solid ability to capture specific feelings or themes within their lyrics. They had silly songs but they were also able to write coherent, sincere lyrics. That seems all but lost on their newer releases and feels like a total regression.
