I would argue that even just Trump being removed through impeachment is enough to be considered a constitutional crisis. Because that's technically never actually happened

  5. An aside ... that "Tenure of Office Act" that Johnson got impeached over sure was interesting.

  7. If Trump hasn't fallen below 80 with his base, there's no hope. They will never change their minds.

Then we'll never get rid of him cause he could well... you know...

    It's hopeless

Even though impeachment and removal has never happened, I don't think that's a Constitutional crisis because the process was put into the Constitution for this exact scenario. It's definitely unprecedented though, but then all of this has been.

That said, I think the potential for a Constitutional crisis does exist with regard to the not-completely-unrealistic scenario that Trump refuses to relinquish power.

I really don't think Trump will get impeached. But his presidency and the situation surrounding it has been so weird and so unlike anything we've ever seen, I'm not taking anything off the table. Anything could happen.

  12. Before any of that I think we'll see a crisis over the role of the executive and judicial branch. Trump will refuse to do something, or order someone to uphold his travel ban after it's been denied, or something like that.

  13. I think if Dems take back the House he'll be impeached.

[And probably acquitted in the Senate (unless his approval drops way down, and a lot of seats are picked up in 2018).]

The odds of impeachment I think increase if he wins in 2020.

Nothing would surprise me. Can't wait for the pee tape to come out and Republicans to say there's no reason to impeach now because Putin lost his blackmail

Oh yeah that's totally possible too. Honestly unless they all decide to grow spines magically overnight after this hearing tomorrow I think something like this happening could potentially be what sets impeachment in motion, if anything ever does. Especially if a conservative-majority Supreme Court backs up the unconstitutionality of whatever Trump does.

  17. To make sense of how tomorrow will work..Comey will begin by reading the statement from today, verbatim, correct? And then the panel will just begin to ask him follow-up questions?

I assume Andrew Jackson is Trump's hero, both because he killed a lot of indigenous people and people of color and because he told the Supreme Court that, if they wanted to enforce a finding, they could go and do it themselves.

I think so. Or, someone else (his lawyer? chairman of the committee?) reads it "on behalf of Former Director James Comey to be put in the public record"

  20. how serious do people take these papers .... is this like the National Enquirer or what's a good proxy for here in America?

I think British tabloids have had significant institutional power, so I guess they're similar to Fox News, if Fox News had been around for sixty or so years.
