IIRC, I feel like the debate moderator and anyone else who ever questioned Pence about his social views got a whole lot of "I don't want to get into all that" from him and didn't press him nearly hard enough on them. I feel like he definitely said something like 'I'm focused on the issues that matter to the American people', and just once I wanted a moderator or Kaine or somebody to say "Well, Michael, there are a lot of gay people who are also American people who would say your inclination to electrocute the gay out of them is an issue that matters to them."

James Clapper, the former director of US National Intelligence, said he believes the Watergate scandal during the 1970s “pales” in comparison to the assault on US institutions currently being perpetrated by Russia and President Donald Trump.

In a speech on Wednesday to Australia’s National Press Club in Canberra, Mr Clapper said he was “very concerned” by the actions of Mr Trump, including his sharing of intelligence with the Russians and his firing of James Comey, director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

“I lived through Watergate; I was on active duty then in the Air Force; I was a young officer — it was a scary time,” said Mr Clapper, who served under President Barack Obama.

“I have to say, though, that I think if you compare the two, that Watergate pales, really in my view, compared to what we’re confronting now.”

Mr Clapper said the “egregious and inexcusable” manner in which the Trump administration removed Mr Comey from office reflected a complete disregard for the independence and autonomy of the FBI.

“I am very concerned about the assault on our institutions coming from both an external source, read Russia, and an internal source, the president himself,” he said.

Mr Comey was overseeing an FBI investigation into links between the Trump presidential campaign and Russian officials when he was fired last month. On Thursday, the former director of the FBI will testify before the Senate intelligence committee, his first public appearance since he was removed.

The investigation into links between the Trump campaign team and Russia, and the president’s decision to sack Mr Comey, have sparked accusations that Mr Trump has obstructed justice, leading to comparisons with the Watergate scandal that toppled Richard Nixon. These claims have been denied by Mr Trump.

Mr Clapper said Russia embarked on a campaign to interfere with the presidential election, which was “unprecedented in its directness and aggressiveness”.

“The Russians are not our friends. They and Putin specifically, despite his disingenuous denials, are opposed to our democracy and values and see us, particularly the United States, as the cause of all their problems and frustrations,” he said.

He said Mr Trump’s subsequent actions in sharing sensitive intelligence with the Russians and compromising its source reflected either ignorance or disrespect. Either was problematic, he added.

Mr Clapper said then president-elect Trump had commented to him before taking office that it would be a good thing “if we could get along” with the Russians. He said he told Mr Trump there were times when both countries interests’ converged but as far as being “intimate allies, trusting buds with the Russians, that wasn’t going to happen”.

“It is in their genes to be opposed, diametrically opposed, to US and western democracies,” said Mr Clapper.

Mr Clapper said it was critical for the FBI investigation into the Trump campaign’s links with Russia to determine what happened.

“As I have often said, it is absolutely crucial for the United States, and for that matter for the world, for this presidency, for the Republicans, for the Democrats and for our nation at large, that we get to the bottom of this,” he said.

“Is there a smoking gun with all the smoke? I don’t know the answer to that,” he said. “I think it is vital, though, that we find that out. In the interim I cannot explain this solicitousness with the Russians.”

Either one is funny as shit though. "Lick my asshole" is a very underrated and under utilized insult.
