Not cheesy at all. Lillard's performance in that movie, especially in that final act, is brilliant.

I was in the seventh grade when that movie came out and I watched it for the first time when it came out on video... I had a tough time falling asleep that night simply because I felt frightened that theoretically kids just a few years older than me were capable of cold-blooded murder.

    "I'll chew on a dog!"

According to IMDB, Lillard improvised that line and Craven loved it.

You ever dream you watched a horror film but upon waking up you realized that film doesn't exist? I just had this weird dream of a made-up Adam Wingard movie. It's a about a group of friends who spend a snowy weekend in a cabin but something horrible goes wrong. It starts out with six friends made up of two couples and two platonic friends played by Thomas Middleditch and Olivia Wilde. Tommy M has had a secret crush on Olivia and over the course of the movie, they hash it out in typical dialogue-heavy mumblecore. Meanwhile, the heavy snow has caused a power outage at the cabin. They eventually reveal their feelings for one another and have sex for the first time. Now that the tension is relieved, two more friends are spotted as arriving to the cabin. Tommy and Olivia decide to play a prank where she puts on some horror-type makeup to make it look like she's badly-injured/dead/turning into a zombie. As the newly introduced friends arrive and see her, they freak out and stab her in self-defense. This leaves Olivia badly injured as she reveals it was all a prank. Tommy becomes enraged and murders those two friends while Olivia remains dying. At that point I wake up but this dream just kept running through my head. That's it, I just felt the need to document that here. But does it feel like it could be a typical Adam Wingard movie?

Evil Dead 2 is being screened Friday night. I'm going to make it a double feature with It Comes At Night. I can't wait.

That's awesome. I remember reading something about how many of his lines have been improvised and it was an impressive amount of great ones.

I actually prefer Asian Horror film, I love the blood and that remarkable ghost face. Most of all I love the twist of the story. Who wouldn't love Shutter and Ju-on: The Grudge?

The Shining is great! Plus the whole movie is a metaphor for Kubrick admitting he shot the moon landing footage.

Clearly it's about the genocide of Native Americans. Or the Holocaust. Whatever it is, it's definitely NOT about a father descending into madness.

I agree. Look at his face and how crazy he looks in the opening scene on the way to the cabin. It's like he hates his wife and kid already.

I think he was sane prior to entering the hotel with his family. He was definitely fighting alcoholism and had a history of child abuse, but I think he went to the hotel with good intentions.

I can't remember if it's explicitly stated in the movie, but in the book it's basically his last chance to keep his family and his shit together. Anyway. I don't know if I'd describe his performance as hammy, but it is peak Jack Nicholson. Witches of Eastwick comes to mind as well

edit: when are we gonna get a Doctor Sleep movie?

It did make me lol tho cause the movie was still on and I was in the dining room eating dinner and looked over at the t.v. I thought someone paused it but it was just jack creepily staring for a prolonged period of time without blinking.

I have a fondness for it tho. When I was a kid my dad thought it was funny to write redrum on things so it has a place in my

Just for my own personal research, I'm curious if anyone/everyone wouldn't mind quoting me and answering the following...

Where do you currently watch horror movies, and do you own contemporary films on home video? Do you tend to watch new movies in theaters (if so, how do you decide what to watch), do you watch on Netflix (if so, how do you decide which films are worthy of watching?), and do you ever buy physically (DVD or BD, and if so, then why?)

If I get more than 10 responses, then all responses are entered in a free giveaway from me,to be picked at random. And no, I'm not kidding

EDIT: you can PM me if you don't want to clog up this thread, doesn't matter to me

Steve I'll give you a more serious answer later, but would you consider 1999's House on Haunted Hill to be contemporary or dear god that was 18 years ago wtf

because I bought that on DVD as soon as I could back in the day haha

Most of my horror watching is at home. In terms of watching contemporary horror, I found Netflix to be the rest resource, especially independent horror that didn't get a wide release in theaters. I rarely see horror movies in theaters (then again I don't go to movies as often as I did). The last few more recent horror movies (as in the last 5 years) I've seen are Purge: Anarchy, Green Room, Cabin In The Woods, and Scream 4. I usually seek them out if I heard glowing reviews. I don't own a ton on DVD/Blu-Ray but the ones I have are I considered my favorite. In terms of BD, I recently got Green Room, It Follows, and the Nightmare on Elm Street box set.
