Bill Maher isn't funny. His political opinions are insightful at times, and really bad at times.

But I'll be damned if the panels aren't some of the best discussion on TV sometimes.

It's pretty easy to understand for me:

    1. Many of them have done amazing things for the kids that are lucky enough to end up there.

    2. Everyone believes their kid will be the one to win whatever lottery nonsense it takes to get there.

    3. Nobody cares about education policy enough to give a shit about oversight. They want to hear about test scores, not the stuff that gets students there.

    4. People have been conditioned over the years to hate unions, and especially teachers' unions, enough that they don't give a shit how charters chew up and spit out teachers

    Basically, we're all fucked.

Liberals have trouble holding one another accountable. Even now, people are still talking about the good things about him, rather than him being a racist piece of shit.

  21. There is one.

  22. If your profile is private your mini-profile is too. They contain the same info.

  23. Not without exposing profile information. If the user wants their profile private, I don't wanna expose any of their profile at all. I think the expectation of a private profile is that it's private and not accessible at all. I think privacy is most important if someone checks that box. You can make it viewable to those you follow.

They can still message you. I think that's pretty discoverable as well. But by and large if someone has a private profile I don't think they want random messages either.

Hey all, I have a question that I'm hoping some of the POC/women/trans/indigenous posters in here could help me out on. I just got my degree and am applying to jobs relevant to my field. As quite a bit of you know, I focus on climate change mitigation/environmental policy, but through the lens of environmental and climate justice and MPE. Now that I've graduated I'm starting to apply for jobs, initially I've found that organizations who are doing work quite consistent with my ideology and vision are primarily run by or are explicitly driven to further the needs of POC, women, or other non-CIS, white, straight male communities, of which I fall under the latter, privileged category.

So as I think about my placement in all this, I theorize two scenarios. One the one hand, as a socialist, I see the common struggle for climate change mitigation, decreased pollution, clean energy, etc., as one in the same, an effort by the masses from across all racial and class and gender lines to overcome the destructive hegemony of fossil capitalism. Thereby, I want to affect change in the most meaningful way that I can, and some of these positions appear to be great ways of doing so. On the other hand, I wonder if this a situation akin to that of POC students needing POC teachers, to show that we need people from non-white and non-CIS male groups to be seen fighting for these progressive changes, because marginalized communities have had so little say in their environmental situations in the past. I also realize that I can likely do work alongside the coordination and vision of these groups too.

I hope this makes sense and that Chorus peeps like @Dominick @Jose @St. Nate @lightning13 and others might be able to offer their thoughts. Really is appreciated.

In my opinion, while it is a common struggle, the responsibility has fallen on all people equally, rather than from a historical standpoint. Personally, while I believe that all people should attempt to do the most to limit their own carbon emissions, other emissions, etc, the blame should fall squarely on upper-class white cis men and the systems of oppression and governance that they propagate.

On a macro level, take Nicaragua: historically, they are largely not at fault for the massive levels of carbon in our atmosphere. Therefore, they chose not to join the Paris Climate Accords because it is an agreement which equally disperses blame, instead of acknowledging thst countries like the US, UK, France, etc have pushed us to this level. It is unfair to expect all nations in the Global South to be a part of an agreement that forces them to make the same concessions as the US. For instance, if you steal a pack of beers, and your friend burns the whole store down, but you're given equal sentences, that is ridiculous. Same concept imo.

On a micro level, rich white men particularly have been in control of those Western countries I mentioned up above. They do nothing but further their own interests. Unfortunately, these interests involve fossil fuels which result in things like fracking and continued use of coal. Therefore, rich white cis men are largely to blame for the climate crisis.

While you should use your abilities to improve the environment and take part in these organizations, remember that historically non-cis POC have been hit hardest by climate change as a result of largely white, capitalistic interests. Be an ally. Amplify the voices of those organizations, but don't grab the microphone yourself unless you are left with no choice (which is rarely rarely rarely the case).

I hope this was somewhat helpful and not too rambly.
