Been through it twice today lol

 

Gotta give that title to TOYPAJ.

 

I can't believe Enema of the State is 18 years old today. I honestly have no clue what kind of music I would be into today if it wasn't for hearing What's My Age Again in the summer of 1999 randomly because my friend made a mix CD and brought it to a pool party we were going to. I have nothing be great memories looking back and listening to this album over and over again.

 

Guys, this also means we must raise our glasses to the late great Jerry Finn. If it wasn't for him this album wouldn't be what it is.

Enema was honestly the album that really got me into pop punk and really got me into the band. When I first heard " What's My Age Again ? " I was completely hooked. I mean knew songs like " Josie " and " Damn It " and I liked those but it didn't completely hook me at the time.

 

I prefer TOYPAJ. A teensy bit heavier, guitars sound a teensy bit harder, Travis' percussion is a little more dynamic and fuller sounding, lyrics are a little less sexist. They're super close, the best tracks on both albums are all great, the bubblegump pop singles on both are great, and both have a couple swings and misses.

Everytime I Look for You, Stay Together for the Kids, Reckless Abandon, Anthem Pt. II, Roller Coaster, Please Take Me Home as personal favorites from TOYPAJ are a pretty strong rival against Going Away to College, Dumpweed, Wendy Clear, Don't Leave Me, Anthem and Adam's Song on Enema, though I love all those songs. First Date and Rock Show break even with What's My Age Again and All the Small Things. As far as tracks I find weak, either because they've never done much for me or I find their lyrics painfully retrograde now, Enema has a few more instances in the Party Song, Mutt, Dysentery Gary and Aliens Exist vs. Give Me One Good Reason, Happy Holidays, and Shut Up.

Plus TOYPAJ has three solid to great bonus tracks.

 

My first date with my first serious girlfriend consisted of sitting in a car by the shore of Lake Erie listening to Enema until 3am. Among many other memories with this album. So not only does this album hold great memories for me, I now feel super old.

 

it kinda weirds me out that i've been obsessed with this band for over half my life, haha.

Being old is one thing but Tom was only 23 when this album came out. Just think about that!
