I listened through three times last night. It was definitely the chill kind of music I expect from Aaron. I don't mind the rapping either - I think it made for a cool juxtaposition of sounds.

I wonder if they're going to do any shows. That'd be cool.

Yeah, I really enjoyed it on my first few listens. The rapping seems more like spoken word than what I would usually associate with rapping - I like the style and think it goes well with the sonic backdrop.

This has got me interested - are there any other rap artists putting out music with a more piano/string driven sound in this style?

Also, some songs really sound like Radiohead's new album had a huge influence on the piano playing for example.

This is a difficult question to answer because Lulls is really ~~whitewashed~~ rap, so my suggestions might be a little different than what you were expecting, but I'll give it a shot. I would check out some of Main Attrakionz' stuff-- very transcendent and atmospheric. Milo has got that really laidback, lyrical vibe. Maybe check out some of Mick Jenkins' stuff. The Underachievers' new album is fantastic as well.

Zaytoven makes some great piano-heavy production, so if you're down to get into some trap music-- I'd check out Gucci Mane's NPR tiny desk concert. Really fantastic and brings out the instrumentation

Thanks for the recommendations. Could you explain your feelings/comments about whitewashing? I want to learn.

I might be terribly blunt about this, but hip-hop and rap are genres deeply embedded in the cultural struggles of minorities, particularly that of black people, and whenever a white person tries to do it, it always feels cheap like they're trying to cash in on it, or announce their position as unique or superior just because they're white. This kind of rap is also oversaturated, safe, uninteresting... I wish I had better words for it, but I'm chalking all of this up to a lack of artistic sincerity which in no way represents the greater talents of those who actually came from black communities. Typically their white fanbase agrees with these white rappers, avoiding all other kinds of rap like trap, which is a subgenre often misjudged.

I'm generalizing here because there are also some great white rappers like Atmosphere and El-P

  7. Not necessarily the same musically, but Somnous' "Postcards" EP features Leighton from Lydia.

Can we get a new record soon? When fall rolls around, I dust off my Copeland records.

Copeland make beautiful autumnal music. Has it ever been confirmed that this will be out before the end of the year?

No confirmation. They've announced some records 6 months in advance (Ixora) and some with about 2 months advance (YAMS). I'm guessing some time in 2018, unless they've been secretly recording.

I thought they confirmed they were going to record and release an album this year when Night Figures was announced?

I think they did say that but at this point I wouldn't be surprised if it's not happening this year.

This band has been making their way into heavy rotation for me. I think ESR's greatness is only just now hitting me.

It's truly incredible that this band managed to write a song like Coffee so early in their career. Overall, BMT is definitely my least favorite of theirs, but that is a career highlight. Easily one of my absolute favorites they've done.

BMT still holds a special place in my musical history. Songs like Brightest, Coffee, California are still some of my favorites. YAMS probably takes it as far as my favorite albums by them.

New Copeland would make for some perfect late fall/early winter nights.

Of course, old Copeland does the same thing, but new Copeland would be the cherry on top.

YAMS is easily the comfiest album I own. So much rainy day cuddling has been to that album
