Endlessly fascinated by this stuff. My industry tenure was in an area where sales literally did not matter at all because it was such a small operation - it's fun to look at the big machinations.

Sometimes it's hard for me to listen to the other songs on the album because I wanna listen to Told You So and Tell Me How so much. Also I think I finally like grudges.

I don't know why. But I find it funny how the most aggressive sounding song title on a pretty darn sad album is easily the happiest song here ("Grudges").

Damn I must be really out of the loop. I thought panic wasn't even a band anymore. Thats why I thought Brendon could spend his time being a great ETID fan like the rest of us.

well yeah, if the record's good, the record's good. sales shouldn't have anything to do in that regard

Hard Times finally hit the top 40 radio chart today. Give it time and I think we'll soon be hearing it all over the radio!

Finally got around to listening to this. It's pretty easily my favourite album of theirs already.

In my experience, they were doomed by the fact that girls didn't like them. Every girl I knew back then who was into scene stuff couldn't stand them. It always baffled me.

Such an amazing band. Truly wish I had caught a show when I was in high school and listened to Ghosts Of York every day of my life.

A little behind but here's a few thoughts:

    1) Yea Panic! is the biggest that they've ever been right now. It's not about their singles, it's about a massive, dedicated fanbase. From what I understand, they're big with the younger crowds/high schoolers right now. They're huge the same way Halsey is - not counting Closer, there's no real smash hit, but just enough alternative radio hits that all the kids are coming out in huge numbers. Which, I might add, is the way to ensure a successful long term career.

    2) I won't go too into it cus plenty of people have said it, but it's clear first week sales were not their concern. Get the album out in time for summer (perfect summer album), tour dates, and to get there name back out there, and then just let it spread word of mouth. I've seen praise from musicians all over the spectrum - they tweet, then their fans check it out, etc. It's going to be an album that continues to grow over the next few years, especially when they push more singles (and I still wouldn't be surprised if Hard Times catches on).

    3) I still adore this album.

Do we know when the album was finished? Their approach is obviously working for them but it doesn't seem like there was any real benefit to this way over a more traditional roll out of the album was done for a while (i.e could've still been out for summer)

It looks like they did it to get the album out in front of their summer tour dates. This is what Jason confirmed a few posts back.

Right, I was just curious whether it'd been completed long enough that they could do a more traditional roll out and still get it out in front of tour. They may not need or care for first week sales but if you can get em, why not? All that said, I liked this rollout, I'm just curious.

Next Show: Jamie xx -- 1/12

I'm pretty sure (from band posts and whatnot) they finished recording in November.

Oh yea I see what you're saying now. I guess my impression was that they really didn't finish too long ago. I thought they had kind of said something earlier in the year that they would get it out as soon as they can. I get the feeling they basically finished the album and just said "alright, when's the quickest we can get this out now".

They may have finished recording in November, but who knows what might have happened in the mixing stages or if they had to redo anything. I don't know I won't pretend to know the nuances of a creating an album, but that's the impression I got.

  24. Panic! saw a huge resurgence in internet popularity in like 2013 because Brendon gained a huge following on Vine prior to the release of Too Weird To Live
