#1 picks are very very different than #5 picks or #24 picks. (Intentionally avoiding saying #22 because...you know)

If you're picking at #1, it's usually because you have a massive hole at the QB position. There are exceptions when teams go to free agency or trades to get a guy (the 2013 draft Chiefs come to mind), but a lot of times, QB is a necessity there.

Whereas if you have a different first round position, say, anywhere between 3-32, there's a good chance you have holes in different places, so fans think "Why would we address QB even though our QB sucks when this amazing player is here and we can get this amazing QB next year?" and then that projected amazing QB has an off year and it changes yet again.

I believe the Panthers would be much better served taking A.J. Green in this year's draft because no matter who they take, including Newton, they will likely be picking near or at the top of next year's draft as well.

If I had my choice between A.J. Green and Andrew Luck or Cam Newton and Justin Blackmon, I'm taking Green and Luck and not looking back./

 

That's why I said potential. I really do like some of the guys, but all the super early 2018 mocks are looking at six different guys that could go in the 1st/early 2nd.

 

Of course once we finally have an interesting discussion that doesn't involve cities I start getting slammed at work

No one's saying "you're wrong because someone else said the same thing before." Just saying one year out is way too early to decide if a QB prospect is good or not. See: Jake Locker, Brett Hundley, Christian Hackenberg, Mitch Leidner, Trevor Knight, Matt Barkley... I can rattle off names for days of QBs that got first round hype or "next great prospect" hype and ended up being thought of as very flawed prospects. Like I said, people only see strengths right now because no one has looked close enough to see the flaws and even if they have, another season's worth of game tape can always expose more flaws and/or players can regress.

 

Also there were a LOT of people who had Gabbert above Newton in the 2011 draft but I digress, that's probably not relevant

I mean, I never thought any of those guys were going to be good but point taken. And by that I mean everyone here understands that already so disrupting a conversation we are all capable of having to explain something we all already know is silly.

lol I see what you did there. I don't see how it's disrupting though, the ideas are intertwined. People always say next year's class will be better because they're seeing next year's class through the rose-colored glasses.

 

Obviously, it didn't become real until he was unstoppably him after downing some Dannon Oikos Triple Zero.

 

Except I've said next year's class will be better once - The year Patrick Mahomes went in the fucking top ten.

 

Anyone else remember the draft talk on Brett Hundley and Mariota the year before they were drafted? Crazy how Hundley fell off.

 

I never saw the craze with Hundley to begin with. I didn't think he was playing like Winston or Mariota.

But man, remember Brad Kaaya? Potential 1st overall to 6th round back up haha.
