The trailer to that movie is trash. If she's appalled then she must have retconned everything else about the movie because that trailer is appalling x10000

    Amateur Hour

I have a question for any knowledgable people who would care to educate a dummy.

If straight, white people create characters that aren't white or are LGBT in like cartoons or comics and they're voiced and/or written by the white people does that "count" as representation so to speak? Like would that be considered a "good" thing or does it not really count since the people doing it aren't actually those races/sexualities etc? I hope someone understands what I'm trying to ask haha.

I guess you could look at representation as a spectrum.
The live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender made Aang, Sokka, and Katara white, while Zuko was brown - 0/10
Matt Damon is the white savior in The Great Wall - 0/10
Don't even get me started on Ghost in the Shell - 0/10
No Asian characters at all - 1/10 - at least they're not fucking shit up
Asian actors playing supporting and/or stereotypical characters with little screen time - 3/10
To actually answer your question: Alison Brie plays Diane Nguyen in Bojack Horseman - 5/10? - I mean, at least the character looks Asian, so it feels less egregious. This might not be the best example because I'm not that far into the show.
Kubo casts white people, but the movie is heavily influenced by Asian culture - 5/10 - again, probably not a good example because I haven't watched it, but this kind of gives you an idea of how I feel about halfway representation in animation--it's literally halfway to 10.
Moana was played by a Hawaiian girl - 7/10 - because, duh, that's what you're supposed to do.
Sense8 casts Korean actors for its Korean characters in its scenes that take place in Korea - 7/10 - because, duh, that's what you're supposed to do.
Fresh Off the Boat casts Korean actors as Chinese characters - 7/10 - I mean, at least they're Asian. You gotta get those famous people in there. I'm pretty sure most of the family is played by actors who are actually Chinese. And it helps that the narrative is so good.
Steven Universe casts POC to play Crystal Gems - 9/10 - These characters are from outer space, so they don't have a "race." so they could be voiced by anyone, and yet they're voiced by POC. What makes it even better is they're complex and well fleshed out characters. And they're the good guys.
Selfie casts John Cho as the male lead/romantic interest, who was originally not written as any race - 10/10 - which makes its cancellation so heartbreaking.

I'm not LGBTQ, so I can't speak for them, but I'd imagine having a cis white male play a trans woman is somewhere between 0/10 and 5/10, while having a trans actress play a trans woman, like in Sense8, is a 10/10.

    Fuck you, Netflix.

it depends, for instance Apu is not exactly good representation, Hari Kondabolu has spoken a lot about it
