So I guess Soulslike is now a real genre, I'm totally fine with that. The Surge looks great, Totalbiscuit just released a really good video dissecting what makes a Soulslike game successful. I love the idea and theme of The Surge, being set in this futuristic setting using these mech-loaders as a way of fighting is just a neat idea. The combat looks slick but also like it has some weight to it.

Ive always wanted to get into the Darksiders series but never really got the chance. Are both of them worth checking out or should I just roll with the second one? The trailer for the 3rd one looked really really good.

Saw TB's video today as well. He was hard on Lords of the Fallen when it came out so for him to be so positive about this one means a lot. Same goes for Jim Sterling, because he's a huge Souls fan and is obviously also never shy about making his opinions on games known. Those two liking The Surge alone may be enough to be me over the edge on it.

As for Darksiders, both are very good. The first one is a straight-up Zelda clone with combat similar to a less-complex God of War, while the second one throws in a more open overworld and a Diablo-style loot system. They're both worth checking out.

If anything I recommend the first over the second but they're kind of different games (Zelda vs more straight up loot action). Check out both.

I'm just gonna ramble here again so feel free to skip over this post lol, but I wanna get my thoughts down - Night in the Woods is one of my favorite games of all time. I started my 3rd playthrough yesterday with the goal of getting all the journal pages completed and doing all the stuff I managed to miss on the other two playthroughs (loads of stuff with Bea), and I love everything about it. It's one of those rare games that has impacted me on a higher level than just entertainment, and I've been able to connect with it emotionally due to the story (not the weird bits obvs) being something I'm going through/have gone through before - returning to your hometown after college having made zero friendships and struggling with loneliness/depression while there, trying to reconnect with the few friends you had in said hometown who all have lives/plans without you and them leaving too, parents on at you for not getting a job etc.

The way it approaches mental health issues is pretty great imo - the fact you get into a routine in-game of going to visit certain people every day and doing certain things is really calming to me when I play it and has inspired me to add more of a routine to my real life instead of just living on autopilot or w/e. Same with the journal - I actually went out and bought myself one which I now carry around with me and draw stuff about my life and thoughts etc! The music when you are walking around the town is so soothing also, I've taken to finding it on youtube and playing it when i'm worked up or angry lol. Uhhh, yeah - great game!

For those in here who have MLB 17, is it worth the upgrade from 16? All I really play is RTTS fwiw. I'm debating buying it, but I feel like I'll regret it immediately.

Huh, who would've thought that giving away substantive free content would make players more likely to spend money on your game post-launch?

Not fracturing the player base is better for retention and retention of course leads to spending in many cases, be it for cosmetics (which I think is the best model) or for, in Halo's (some other games do this too) case, req packs. PC games have figured this out a while ago and console games, Halo being the biggest example, are starting to catch up. Paid map packs for online shooters are on their way out I think, especially if your game is not called Call Of Duty.

Yeah I mean the Overwatch model proves that if your game is fun and you keep the player base on equal footing re: maps and characters, the money will flow. Granted, this model can open the door to pay-to-win mechanics with blind-buy boxes containing actual weapons or attachments or whatever, but that's an entirely different conversation. In its purest form, it's good for the developer and the player.
