I'm definitely enjoying the experience, its just that its another 'push one button to fight' game. It looks really great so far on the PS4 and the concept of the game is cool enough. I'll see how I get through the first two to figure out how interested I am in a third.

I had a great time with the first Darksiders despite the shallow combat. The second game's combat is a little deeper with a much bigger variety of weapons and added loot but loses some of the stronger Zelda clone elements (which is frankly why I enjoyed the first game so much). It's still good but I prefer the first. Definitely curious to see what they do with the third.

The second I heard Mark Hamill's voice I got super excited.

I tried getting into Darksiders before but the game didn't click with me. I mean I thought the controls were good but I just didn't feel like finishing it.

Finished Outlast 2 today and I don't really know how I feel about it? It wasn't as scary (or as good lol) as Outlast 1 or the Whistleblower DLC imo - it had more of an uncomfortable/disturbing vibe as opposed to the tense panic I felt when playing the first one. But I did not expect to have so many unanswered questions by the end and have to jump online to piece everything together - the school parts were some of the scariest moments, but the reveal of the implied sexual abuse of a minor was a shock I'm still grappling with, and a topic that I am not so sure I want explored in video games ever. Further reading online suggests there is even more to that aspect of the story than is clear on first play, unless you are very good at putting the flashbacks together and reading into the imagery etc. Also the suicide of a child is again something that has actually made me more upset than anything - several adults commit suicide during the game and it made no impact on me at all, which makes me feel wrong in and of itself but I won't ramble on, but seeing child suicide (and the events that clearly led to it) was not "horror" but just disturbing.

Graphically it was great - the raining blood part was brilliant! - and some of the chases were genuinely tense as FUCK, but the overall story was just lacking something and felt rushed or incomplete. The cult leader was in two scenes in the whole game, the secondary antagonists were weaker than those from Outlast 1 and what the fuck was the white light?! The fact that a key document that literally explains the whole story was missed by a large majority of players sums it all up really.

So yeah, there's my review that no-one asked for lmao.

I've never played the first Outlast so I can't really compare but I thought the school section was way more interesting and affecting than the rest of the game. I didn't feel like the story was that difficult to follow or complex really but maybe I missed parts of it? Idk. I don't mind that some parts like the white light weren't explained, things like that work for me left up to your own interpretation/imagination. I have no real issue with any themes or topics being tackled by any medium as long as it's done well and I feel like it was here. Persona 5 touches on similar things too. Also, yeah the raining blood was fantastic.

Apparently there is a document in the lake part that confirms that the company from Outlast 1 was using the same methods to make the inmates of the asylum in Outlast 1 go crazy as they were on the cult in this game. It was some sort of waves via the radio towers that you see on the lake part also, but if you haven't played the first one then the document wouldn't mean anything to you! I agree that the themes were handled well tbh but they do such a good job of making you like Jessica and want to find her/save her in the school that when the full picture is revealed it makes it that much more upsetting.
Story parts like the super-quick pregnancy, Lynn saying "there's nothing there" when dying (plus lots online saying the child wasn't real?!) the white light, does Blake + baby die at the end all not answered for me, Knoth only having 2 short scenes, coupled with me not realising that the school demon was actually representing that horrible priest (lol) just contributed to my overall sense of confusion. Still an enjoyable game to play through, i'd give it a 7.5/10.

Anybody checking out that game The Surge on Tuesday? Sci-fi Souls-like from the Lords of the Fallen devs. Apparently it's getting a lot of positive buzz. Looks pretty cool.

Yeah, that sounds very cool for fans of the first game but I don't think it's vital.

Yeah, I think all of that stuff is just supposed to be left open to interpretation. I've heard a few cool theories and my own thoughts, I think the baby was definitely real personally. I'm a big fan of things not being overly explained though, Bloodborne's my favourite game and that games very light on explicit explanation plus I love things like Lost and David Lynch films that some people get frustrated at for not answering all of the questions they create.

I think I'd give it about a 7 too. Fun game, some very cool imagery and I really liked the school stuff. The rest was a little too standard horror for me but done well.

The Surge looks cool, I'll definitely keep my eye on that. Hopefully they can really pull that off and make something special.

Most of what I've seen this weekend has been saying that it's a huge step up for them after Lords. Looking forward to the review scores and will probably get it if it's generally well-received.

I just hope the gameplay is solid and it's not repetitive. One of the main issues I had with Nioh was how repetitive the enemies and locations became and that's one area where the souls series is fantastic. I also hope the storie/lore is somewhat decent but I'm not expecting too much in that department.

Yeah my favorite part of the Souls series is the exploration/environments so I hear you on that one. That's the main reason I'm holding off until the reviews, personally. Combat looks like a faster version of Dark Souls but not quite Bloodborne fast. Jim Sterling said the blocking isn't very effective, which obviously leans more toward the Bloodborne side of prioritizing dodging. But yeah, keeping my eye on it as the reviews come in for sure.

The Surge looks really cool, assuming the review scores aren't terribly low I'll pick it up. Lords was fun.
