I could not do that without pulling my hair out. Them not putting Mr November at the top of the list is weird to me, I thought that song was more universally loved than Bloodbuzz

Geese of Beverly Road and About Today might be my two favorites, they are atleast my most underrepresented favorites

"itll take a better war to kill a college man like me" is one of my favorite Matt lyrics. Idk it evokes this image of a guy at a party who wants to bring up the iraq/middle east war but never quite gets the chance to do so so he just finds something meaningless on tv. i just love that song haha

No "Pink Rabbits" on the NME list (or any list) instantly makes it foolhardy and incorrect for me. That song might just be my favorite / what I consider their best.

"I don't want you to grieve but I want you to sympathize. I can't blame you for losing your mind for a little while; so did I. I don't want you to change but I want you to recognize that I..."

NME list is bad but I do agree that Bloodbuzz Ohio is their best song.

This is probably the hardest list i've ever tried to put together. a lot of these songs would be on an "absolute top 10" list but at the very least this is my top 10 for the last year or so (no order):

    "Pink Rabbits"
    "Santa Clara"
    "Little Faith"
    "Conversation 16"
    "The Perfect Song"
    "City Middle"
    "All the Wine"
    "Bloodbuzz Ohio"
    "Slow Show"
    "Wasp Nest"

My list would be songs from the last two records. I'm bad at putting the time into records that were released by bands before I was a fan.

i dont quite get the hype for Bloodbuzz Ohio. I mean, its still a great song (id argue all the songs theyve released from "Cardinal Song" to "The System Only Dreams In Total Darkness" are at the very least good) but idk a lot of people consider it this masterpiece and it just feels like a really good National song to me. I guess it has a lot to do with it being the gateway for a lot of fans.

i think it is a gateway song that got a lot of people in to the band, and it can be hard if not impossible to NOT include the first song that connected you to a band as a favorite / best song in a band's discography. for me, the "gateway" song was "The Perfect Song" years and years ago. have they released 10 better songs since then? absolutely, but that's what got me into the band and there's a lot of connection there that bumps it ahead of better songs.

As for "Bloodbuzz Ohio" i think it's one of their catchier songs and for me personally, lyrics like, "I'll never marry but Ohio don't remember me", "I still owe money to the money to the money I owe / I never thought about love when I thought about home" are so fucking smart and hit so close to home that it instantly became a memorable favorite. (literally helps that i have a lot of memories in the state of Ohio to boot)

Bloodbuzz has an amazing drum beat, great chord progression, and extremely emotionally resonant lyrics with matt perfectly in character. The three main ingredients for a perfect national song

it has none of these things and its their worst song by a mile so bland

this is me mocking myself and how I sometimes "discuss" music with you this is a joke pls dont be mad you know i love you im poking fun at myself

this is something that always comes back to me for the song - he comes off so confident / arrogant sounding that it's a bit of a departure from most of the discography and definitely stands out in a great way

Bloodbuzz was the song that got me into them. Still love it but I also love pretty much every song they've made so

I guess the confidence/arrogance in found in Bloodbuzz is a really interesting dynamic to Matts writing, I suppose thats why I find "All The Wine" so appealing. Only Matt could write "Im a perfect piece of ass like every Californian, so tall I take over the street" and completely sell it
