I'd love to know how much input Matt really had on California and the Deluxe version.

 

Finn was easily a bigger loss than Tom is now. I think people still underestimate how important Jerry Finn was to this band. I'm just happy blink is having success again and making music I can enjoy even if I don't connect to it the same as I did back in the day.

I definitely will be fairly disappointed if they don't get more creative and play to a lot more of Matt's strengths on the next album and push themselves in general more. For me the last year seemed so crappy that I didn't really need blink to try to get too deep on me or anything. California was perfect for me last year (not to be confused with me thinking it's a perfect album) and songs like Cynical, Left Alone, BTD and San Diego made continuing as blink with Matt well worth it.

 

I got excited when I heard it sounded like EOTS but wow that was rough.

There doesn't seem to be any quality control when it comes to the lyrics. The impact of no Jerry Finn destroyed how well this band was doing quality wise. It seems with Neighbourhoods it lacked direction mainly from the lack of producer. Now this time around they have one but it doesn't seem there is anyone in there telling them the lyrics suck or this idea isn't a good one. I'm guessing with Matt still being new he's keeping his creativity low because I know he can write better lyrics than this. Heck I know Mark can.

Bored to Death was awesome this is not.

 

I enjoyed California a good bit, and these tracks are better than some of the main album songs, but the songs they're better than are really, really bad songs. This and Misery are my favorite of the deluxe tracks.

That's not true. I'm all for constructive criticism as are many others. Now, when that criticism becomes either over emphacized, forced on others, assumed that it's the only right opinion, and posted pretty much the same thing every time a new thing drops when you haven't been a fan of anything they've done in 5-15 years(seriously why waste your time in a blink thread if you haven't liked them since Enema or something??) is when it starts to be off putting.

I've liked everything they've done including Neighborhoods, DED and the majority of California (even if I only liked it and didn't love it) but I can admit I don't like these new songs

 

They've been my favorite band for almost 20 years. I've loved everything they've done through Untitled. I'll defend CC and Buddha to the death. They mean a lot to me. It just sucks that they've fallen off so much. It's lazy songwriting, a cash grab.

 

And that is fine, you are welcome to that opinion as it is yours. That is what I love about music. One mans 'cheap and unpleasant' is another mans 'hell yeah put this on repeat!'

My point was not aimed at any one poster in particular, just randomized examples of when criticism can be a little perturbing

 

I think this thread is actually pretty chilled and reasonable when it comes to negativity. Most of us seem DESPERATE to actually LIKE the new stuff and are just disappointed when they don't. At least I am. Plus it's a blink discussion thread not just a blink appreciation thread so where else can I whine if not here?! WHERE?!

I don't think that's true at all. I get that you love Blink and are excited for the new stuff, and I'm really happy that you are. But that doesn't mean people can't say they dislike the new songs.

Blink are my all time favourite band. I do not think these are good songs. California is super listenable and really catchy in parts, some really good songs on there. I do not think these Deluxe ones are. That doesn't mean I'm hating or think that mine is the only right view, just means more space for discussion.

Enjoy what you want, and don't enjoy what you don't want to enjoy. No one is forcing any views on anyone, just discussion.

 

I'm assuming it leaked? How would you rank it compared to their other albums?

 

I don't think it's wrong to say you dislike the songs, and if I come off that way I apologize personally. I'm always up for debate and criticism; we are free willed and free thinking human beings after all. I just don't like when someone basically swears that if you like this or that song you are wrong, or makes it a point to point out they dislike pretty much everything. Same is the reverse though; i would never want someone to force the opinion of having to like something on me. All sides of the spectrum deserve a say; as long as it's done tastefully is my point
