Was in Nashville last weekend and we went to a highly rated and expensive Mexican restaurant. It was trash. Maybe I'm just spoiled from living in Southern California, but I am still pissed considering the price.

my experience is limited since I've started actually eating mexican food, but the best tacos I've had were from a food truck in the parking lot of a gas station in CA

Italian food is amazing and there's a bunch of nonsense going on in this thread

  3. I got Mexican from our local joint (very affordable) for lunch a couple of weeks ago and then fancy Italian-American for my anniversary last week and both slapped

The best tacos I’ve ever had are from a place in Pittsburgh called Edgar’s and it’s changed location several times from a food cart outside a Mexican grocery store to an actual restaurant and back to a food cart. I was just down where it was the last time I had it and it wasn’t there anymore. But according to google it’s still a place. I need to find where it went.

if anyone wants to know how to tell if a mexican place is legit it's if they make their own salsa and preferably their own chips and tortillas

If a Mexican place doesn't make it's own salsa, I don't even want to know what else is going on there.

My place makes their own salsa and their own red and green sauces

I made carbonara for the first time. It is good. Excited to eat it cold for breakfast tomorrow.

Another sign of a good Mexican place is if they have a couple house made hot sauces, bonus is guacamole made to order

Carbonara is like Mick's worst nightmare. It's basically Bacon & Egg Spaghetti with tons of grated Italian cheese. He would hate this and it rules.

You're supposed to use Pecorino Romano for Carbonara, but that shit is way too expensive now so I just used Parm.

Same. I’ll also use bacon or pancetta instead of guanciale. It’s hard to find and to be honest I prefer the taste of pancetta.

I've always found pecorino to be less expensive than parm. I think guanciale really takes those Roman pasta dishes to the next level and is what makes them so special. Pancetta is a good substitute, but I like the fat content and richer flavor of guanciale much more.

While we're semi on the subject, hate any and all "elevated" Mexican food places. At least if they were run by actual Mexicans I'd be like yes get that bag. But they never are. Mexican food doesn't need elevating. Hole in the wall, or bust. Idek how the margarita factory is always so busy, espesh in my area with a sizable Hispanic population and an abundance of good Mexican food.
