and I really like "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" which is what I'm on now.

 

I wanted to say American Idiot but I knew you'd said one time it didn't hold up as well as the other couple from the same year, so I think I underestimated how high you'd put it. My bad, glad to see it though!

 

Well yeah, it's only the 3rd highest rated album from 2004, ha.

I love Dark Blue and I'm finding out I like MFEO a lot too but otherwise I'm just not into them much. Rescued is cool too. So I like them slightly more than I used to but yeah.

I hope they get the opportunity to do a live stream/TV/etc for one of their final tour shows. One of their LAS shows had one thanks to Yahoo, so fingers crossed.

I agree, although I also don't like "In My Room" very much. "Parachute" definitely has a lot of defenders though, it's actually kinda weird how much they pop up when anyone says they don't like the song.

But Drowning

 

Drowning is great. the only song I could see an argument for besides Parachute is We Will Wait in the Fog

 

Drowning is garbage. Knives is bad. Never Feel Alone is boring. Reach for the Sun is boring. A Space to Grow is boring. Waves is the worst song on WP and it's still solid. We Will Wait in the Fog is great.

 

I don't talk about it as much, because Green Day are not a favorite band of mine. I like most of their stuff, but that's the only one that's close to a favorite. It's not like Butch or Bruce or JEW or Andrew McMahon where I love pretty much everything they've done.

You are talking about a song that literally starts with the line "Today is the day, the worst day of my life." That's awful writing. Plain and simple.

"Love Drunk" is also an extremely juvenile song, but it's always felt tongue in cheek to me, like they weren't taking themselves very seriously. That's certainly what it seemed like on their tours around that time. "The First Time" is nostalgic, which is a different thing than juvenile. It's looking back at youth, instead of exuding the awkward angst of youth like "Learning to Fall."

Did I give it a 10 or did I give it a 9.5? I can't remember.

Plus it's extremely Springsteen-esque thematically. I've always liked the character beats of it more than the political ones.

I feel this way about pre-Warning Green Day. I think he really improved as a vocalist throughout the 2000s as the band got away from writing 2-3 minute pop-punk songs and let their music open up. I think he's pretty terrific on American Idiot.

It is, admittedly, more inextricably linked to the mid-2000s than Letters or Futures. But yeah, that trio of 2004 albums was pretty vital to developing my tastes.

"Parachute" has a great bridge, which sells it. I'm not crazy about the chorus. I love "In My Room" though.

No way. I don't love "Parachute" and I'd still take it over all but like four of the songs on Golden Record.

 

Thought there was major YC news again when I saw all the new pages. I should know better by now.

 

Let's be honest, the only major news at this point could be another new song, which probably won't happen for a few more weeks. I think we've already gotten most of the big news for this cycle (breaking up, new album, final tour). Now we're basically just sitting around until the end of September to hear the album.

 

I'm going to attempt to rank the albums which have had the biggest impact on me in the last 1 or so years.Again this is not a challenge of musical quality as i'm sure there are better quality albums out there. These are simply the albums that affected my the most and the ones I will remember being the soundtrack to my life during that time.

I've always thought Billie Joe's voice was great, that was never one I ever got tired of hearing.

TDS...we'll just have to agree to disagree, I actually do think Fog might be their worst song though. However, @SpyKi called a lot of great songs "boring" or "bad" ...

I prefer self titled to Love Drunk, but they're fairly close. Interestingly enough, they both suffer at the back end for me, the last couple songs are among my least favorite for both albums. I don't feel the need to compare the two very much, though, they occupy different spots for me in a way. More than anything, I'm just glad they made two reasonably different pop rock records.

 

With TDS, I just have a bad taste in my mouth from the entire Golden Record cycle. It's very hard for me to even put the best songs on that album alongside their other peaks. I think it has all five of their bottom five songs, and that includes the EP.

They are both top heavy records, for sure. I think it's a bigger problem with self-titled, though I love "Holiday." Love Drunk stays pretty strong until the end for me. "Go" is kind of cheesy and overlong, but I have a soft spot for that song. That album leaked the morning I left home for my freshman year of college, so my first listen to it was when I was driving to school. That song definitely felt...fitting.

What are your views on Crazy World? I can't remember if we've talked about this.
