I will say AEW needs to stop doing weird ass B/C markets. That is a move TNA made when they first toured in 2008-2009. I’m lucky that they’ve come to Portland and haven’t done any weird cities in the NW. Stop going to small towns and focus on varying your bigger markets more.

It's doing great - my issue is the accounts (like that one) focused on extreme tribalism to the point that they'll just unabashedly lie about something that's easily verifiable, because you know they're the same people who will then try to say under 2,000 for for a Dynamite in 10k seat building is no big deal.

I mean that’s the IWC in general. Each company has there Stan accounts that just blindly shit on everything the other company does. That’s also Twitter in general for you nowadays. People make shit up to get attention/impressions. It’s quite unfortunate.

    That's a comparison that I hadn't thought of, but it's a damn good one.

I’m thinking the obvious set up is for Rock to betray Roman causing his to lost the title and Rock v Roman is the long build for the next big PPV.

On another note, it's interesting to see Meltzer trying to finagle his way into claiming he was right about the Mania situation. I'm pretty agnostic about him as a whole, but he cannot ever admit when he just...doesn't know something.

It's very hard to predict something happening when the plans change every minute. It's best to take whatever he or any other reporters say as speculation or rumors instead of facts. Some people get real weird about wrestling reporters like Meltzer and SRS, sometimes it seems obsessive even.

    roamer. wanderer. nomad. vagabond.

    i would kindly disagree.

the collision on rumble weekend in bossier city, la has a hot crowd and seemed packed on the tele.
collision last weekend in the RGV had another hot crowd and was shot well.
tomorrow's collision is in the outskirts of vegas on super bowl weekend.

if you either oversaturate your a markets (chicago), or see declining attendance numbers when returning to your a markets (california), then why not go to smaller b/c towns that rarely get a live televised wrestling show?

(for reference, i was at the first collision episode in chicago. was expecting the same sold out crowd that was in the same building for punk's debut, but there was only about a third/half of that audience for my visit. quite underwheling. and i know they had two other shows that week, regardless.)

It's definitely an obsession of certain people to try to dunk on wrestling journalists/reporters when they get it wrong. It always struck me a jealousy thing, like those people want to be in the know and can't be, so when someone gets something wrong, it allows them to feel like they're on an even playing field for a minute.

Meltzer does have a habit of trying to talk his way out of situations or insert an inane comment to insinuate he was right all along when in reality he just wasn't. I think it adds to the vitriol and combative nature of the fan vs. media battle.

It's also why I just tend to prefer guys who don't try to be news breakers and instead focus on insightful analysis based on (some) insider knowledge. Wade Keller, for example, typically does a good job at that.

I also believe jealously is a big part of it. Regarding Meltzer, I feel like he has been doing this for so long to the point where he doesn't really care about what people say about him, that's why he doesn't give attention to trolls as much as others do.

BTW I am a Fightful Select subscriber. I know many people dunk on SRS because of paywalls etc but for me it's totally worth it, not just because of the scoops.

I still think he gives them a pretty crazy amount of attention, at least on Twitter. I feel like I see him going at it with some random at least once or twice a week, haha.

Probably not quite as much as someone like SRS, though, who, I think does sometimes flaunt his "in" more than appropriate.

i sub to the observer because I think meltzer is an amazing wrestling historian and all of the podcasts are fascinating. not really interested in breaking news or scoops, fightful seems more of that kind of TMZ style coverage where SRS is constantly trying to break stuff. no shade on him, he's usually the first person I ever see report any kind of news so good for him. he is a lil weird on twitter tho

Yeah, the backlog and history contained with something like a sub to the Observer or the Torch is really incredible. If you ever want to do a deep dive on a particular topic or time period, there's really no better way to relive it in real time. Well worth the price of admission to both if that's what you're after.

For what it's worth, I see zero issue with anyone paying for any premium wrestling coverage. The people who are outspoken against it, again, probably suffer from some jealousy and/or a weird superiority complex. There are good people working at pretty much all of those sites doing honest work with fun, legitimate analysis. And, there's usually a decent community with it to boot.

I have a love-hate relationship with SRS. There are many things I like about him but I also get why many people don't like him personally. I met him in person a few months ago and spoke to him for a few minutes and he was the nicest. I have a friend who met Meltzer and Alvarez many times and they were always super nice to him.

There are some reporters who are just complete scum like Billi Bhatti and Brad Shephard. These people are just the worst.

It's a weird thing to hear, but I fucking love my Twitter for wrestling. I have it so perfectly setup where I almost never see annoying shit on there. Granted I mainly just follow wrestlers and promotions.

Im in agreement; their big problem seemed to be two things:

    1. Returning to the same markets every 6 months (often with WWE events in between), just burning them out
    2. Picking the shittiest venue possible.

Like, when I was in DC, they did the first Dynamite at Capital One (14k fans). The next few times they ran some dumpy venue in Anacostia that you basically cant get to by car and is a sketch metro ride. Unsurprisingly, they did like 3.5k then 2.5k; meanwhile WWE was running Royal Farms in Baltimore and Capital One in DC and doing 10k+. When they came back to DC this summer, AEW ran Capital One and did 5k. Hell, now they're running TD Garden and doing 8-9k, but before they were running a shitter venue that did them like 1/3rd of that. Amazing what picking a non-shitty venue will do.

But they still havent visited about 50% of the towns that WWE usually hits with their house shows. They'd probably have done really well in Fairfax for their DC show (instead of Anacostia). Havent hit up most of the midwestern towns (Omaha, Des Moines, etc).

edit: And #3 of course is having the shittiest local marketing of any sports/entertainment product I've ever seen.
