I have a feeling like FPJ's promotion if we ever see it will be more LU than AEW. I think LU proved the "running a wrestling promotion like a traditional TV show being ran by TV people instead of wrestling people" is an ultimately doomed concept.

Although if he can open the doors for all wrestlers to be SAG eligible I hope it work.

 

LU was so great. It was so unique and fun to watch. I really need to do a rewatch soon

 

You could do the LU style (think the AEW vignettes they do for Darby and House of Black, even) but not be so campy and it'd work. I mean, LU was amazing because it committed to the concept, but it fell apart when they actually started making the police backstory a real thing (and made Jake Strong champion...).

But find a middle ground between GLOW (completely scripted, no real matches, very human characters) and LU (scripted vignettes, real matches, over the top characters) and I cant imagine a network that wont have two hours to air it.

Based on what he described it sounds like he wants to run it like a traditional TV show (having own studio space, signing wrestlers to acting type deals) Could be wrong though.

LU's downfall was TV producers treating wrestlers contractually like traditional TV talent. There would be huge delays inbetween seasons and people couldn't work anywhere else. A number of people had to sue to get out of their deals.

Freddie has been outspoken on his podcast about how wrestlers should be unionized and should have health care from wrestling promotions (moreso AEW and WWE).

I'd definitely recommend FJP's podcast episode with Macaulay Culkin. They talked a good amount about it and it seems fun. I know people kind of laugh of FJP's ideas but the dude loves wrestling and seems like he's not an absolute freak show like vince or tony khan. Probably because he's not a billionaire who's brain is completely warped by money.

 

To this point, LU would tape an entire season in like a week and then lock off the talent from appearing on TV in the US the rest of the year...and surely not paying them for a year worth of TV work...which is obviously insane. If you are running a weekly scripted show from your own studio space, thats less of an issue. Doubly so with SAG

I just wonder how much pull FPJ actually has anymore. Not like he's worked anything major/non-animated in years

 

I still cant fathom that WWE, who clearly will use managers to keep people around (they pitched Cole on it, they pitched Bivens managing Lashley, etc), couldnt imagine a manager role for William Regal to keep him around.

And instead he's working maybe the hottest angle in the damn sport
