The only time I ever saw the Briscoes live was for their GCW scaffold match. Had stage seats and in the mayhem of trying to get out of the way, I look to see Jay walking up the stairs just drenched in blood. I got out of the way quick.

The passing of Jay Briscoe has me all sorts of messed up today.

Jay and I are the same age, and he and Mark came up together at my prime time of going to PA/DE/NJ/MD indie shows.

Many times, I'd find myself actually in the same section of general admission as the extended "Briscoe" family, which always gave their matches an extra edge -- especially when you sat near Papa Briscoe, a gentleman who I was never quite sure if he was smartened up to the business.

When they went to NOAH, it felt like a win. When ROH finally had contracts, and they were the first to sign, it felt like a win. When ROH was bought by Tony Khan, and it turned out that the Briscoe's were the first signed, it felt like a win. I've never had a huge level of hometown pride for my sports teams (though I often wear an Orioles cap), but my fandom of Jay and Mark was as close to sort of a college town level of sports fandom I had. Their accolades felt like "our" accolades.

A few years back, because I have friends who work at Sinclair (they're a big company here), I got free tickets to an ROH taping. We were in the friends and family section, which due to the setup of the venue, meant we were right at the edge of the entrance, so we could see the backstage too. The full Pugh family was there. Jay and Mark wrestling around with their kids. It was incredibly heartwarming to see these dudes totally grown up. And then when they had their match, they were one of the few acts who felt like proper stars.

With their trilogy with FTR this year, it felt like they were on the verge of finally receiving their flowers.

Instead, the story ends here. Just a gut punch. Apologies if the above is rambling, I'm just trying to piece my thoughts together about someone who, weirdly enough, has been part of my fandom for 20+ years.

Bill Simmons had Nick Khan on his pod and legitimately asks him everything you would want to ask. Worth a listen.
