There is definitely gimmicked barbed wire. I'm not sure how many guys use it, but its out there. There are some that are more like a plastic. There are others that just bend on contact. With Janela, he is probably using real or close to real barbed wire. I can't imagine him wanting to look like he is faking it too much. lol. As long as they aren't using razor wire, I'm cool with it.

i think he's been kinda there. It's just not a recognizable voice to me yet and his calls didn't really stand out to me. Like with Mauro right away i thought "this guy rules". I have no problem with JR/Excalibur being the 2 man team

 

Imagine thinking Excalibur is just "okay"

Honestly surprised you didn't spell it like "Excaliber" or something, domo.

 

Praising JR in 2019 and saying that Excalibur is 'okay' is mind boggling to me!

 

How do you gimmick hitting someone with a chair though

 

Apparently it was pre-bent and weakened so the impact is way less. But its still a stupid idea, and the fact that the shot missed and still cut him open shows how dumb it was. Chair doesnt wrap around your head with your arms up.

 

Jr is one of, if not, the greatest wrestling announcer of all time...versus a guy I've only heard twice?

JR was a great announcer up until the early 2000's. Lots of guys I'd take before him.

Excalibur has such an incredible wealth of knowledge of wrestler histories and moves. Some of the stuff he brought up and called was stuff I had no idea about.

 

Yep. This is the perfect response.

 

He knows his stuff sure and for AEW, it's important to pass along as much information about these wrestlers no one knows about as they can, but I don't know how i can call someone a GREAT announcer just for being an encyclopedia.

I'm more interested in guys like JR and Mauro. Or a great heel commentator. Excalibur's useful for sure. Didn't think saying he's been "okay" would be such a knock.

I'll be honest, my interest in watching AEW increased by a lot knowing JR was on commentary.

 

How do you feel about Nigel?

 

A fan. Think hes great. I'm sure I'll like excalibur once his voice becomes more recognizable to me.

 

I think you'll find Excalibur fits well into the Mauro mold, especially if they hand him more play-by-play type stuff. He's great in PWG at mixing knowing every move with creating a world of stories (see: Chuck Taylor's falcon arrow). He manages to tell a lot of PWG in-ring stories that would be impossible to follow if you didnt know what all the guys were doing in various promotions.

The call he finally makes when a Falcon Arrow actually finishes a match is pretty funny

 

My problem is that too many times JR is rambling about nothing and getting in Excalibur’s way. I think they occupy the same role. JR is dumbing down whatever Excalibur is talking about and I think that’s the wrong thing to do. The AEW crowd are not casual wrestling fans, they’re wrestling nerds. Having one dude like Excalibur paired with a great heel commentator and the broadcast team would be killer. I care more because of Excalibur because aside from the big names I don’t know much about anyone and he succinctly tells me why who is on my screen is a big deal. I think he’s been incredible.

 

Yeah I thought Excalibur was head and shoulders better than JR at DoN. JR had good and possibly better "moments". But Excalibur was better with the running commentary

 

Yeah. Only 'good' films for Mr. Bautista. (this is at 9% on RottenTomatoes)

 

I also think all wrestling booths should be two people only, heel commentator and a face or a straight man as the play by play. When AEW or WWE expand the booth to bring in a wrestler to talk during the match the four man booth just makes it difficult to get a cohesive story told verbally, because it's constant starts and stops.
