It works if you've got a half dozen solid story lines that lend themselves naturally to pairings. Like Ive been re-watching the build to WM17. A Kane/Undertaker v Rock/Austin match makes sense...Chris Jericho & The Rock vs. William Regal, Kurt Angle & Chris Benoit is a perfect mix of two feuds + a GM + getting the faces sympathy.

WWE's problem is the tag pairings make no sense. Cena, Balor, and Rollins have basically no connection (Balor recently helped Elias against Lashley...why aren't both there?). Neither guy came to help Rollins to end the show...even though Finn ran in to help earlier in the night. Matches that fill 45 minutes of the show while barely advancing a story or character are what fans hate.

edit: Also, if they put Ciampa/Gargano v Black/Ricochet as the main event of an NXT episode, people would be ecstatic.

 

Lucha Underground is a model to potentially follow. Definitely pulls from the NJPW faction style, but they do a pretty good job of protecting the top guys and having clear tiers of talent. A less cartoonish version would work really well as a baseline.

The advantage AEW has is they're already building a universe through BTE. WWE doesnt have any continuity like that at all.

There’s a big difference between a solid living and being a millionaire. And there’s a reason that WWE is where it is. Eventually AEW would have to have a schedule like WWE and a similar system to be as big/profitable. But I’m sure that pride is a big factor for some of these guys. But look at AJ... guy has it all.

 

Thing is, Im not sure that they really have to. Like, WWE House shows are no longer really profitable. They've really struggled with declining ticket sales, and they just cancelled a house show monday after the Rumble. That's the part of the WWE schedule that's a killer.

If they can tour their weekly show, they can still hit quite a few areas and not burn everyone out.
