The social media embargo has lifted on this. It looks like WB is going with only select media for this, which is either because of spoilers or they want to minimize word getting out (They did the same thing with the second “It,” even though they screened the first for everyone).

87% would be a lot more promising with like three times that many reviews imo

I always think of this when they boast about RT reviews (I trust Metacritic over RT). It: Chapter Two was a piece of shit, they just knew how to choose the right critics to screen it to to minimize bad reviews.

Not saying that I think this will be bad. But I put no stock in Rotten Tomatoes early score.

Okay. Got sent the screener today.

On one hand, I hand it to Patty Jenkins for not necessarily wanting to do the same thing twice. This is a weirder, more fragmented story.

There are some beautiful scenes. The cast is great (Pedro Pascal oozes cocaine car salesman energy.) There’s a nice commentary on grief. It’s a little bit campy, but also not really.

And this kind of the problem - the movie pulls itself in several different directions from the very start and instead of course correcting at some point, it just keeps on pulling. There’s not a ton of Wonder Woman. You want more of the sweet scenes between her and Steve from the first movie. But then she’s also dealing with Kristen Wiig and Pascal’s storylines simultaneously, so there’s not much time for that.

The final act is overwrought in every way - the score, the overexpository voiceover, the morality tale that it hammers into you, the “big fight.” I thought the first kind of fell off track in its last act, but had enough goodwill to forgive.

This - ehhhhhhh. It’s worth a watch if you’re a fan of the first. But it’s nothing I’d come back to.

Read a review last week that sounded similar, what a bummer. I'll still check it out as a fan of the first, though

Eh sounds like a fun sequel with some issues. I’ll gladly watch it Xmas night on HBO Max from the comfort of my couch.

It also has some wild interpretations of Middle East politics.

    Uh oh.

(Not that the politics of the first one are great if you actually think about it!)

a few people on (i wanna say) letterboxd who saw it early basically claimed to get vibes from those films. were i to guess, they probably meant as far as overall style and feel

I think critic Walter Chaw has a better grip on it than I do.

He has a tendency to rub me the wrong way by sometimes being a little too cynical, but his writing is always on point. He has a wonderful way with words.

Between this, the first one having the villain be the guy who wanted WWI peace talks, & that Star Wars announcement video where she talked glowingly about her dad’s time in the military...

There’s a really good chance Patty Jenkins has very, very bad beliefs about foreign policy, lol.
