Why is your set up so dusty! I notice this on all your pictures. (Very jealous of your collection btw.)

hey guys, something is wrong with my turntable, wondering if any of you have any idea how to fix it.

i went to throw on a record today, but by turntables arm will not go down. its stuck in the upward position. like, when i press "start", the arm usually rises, moves to the platter, and then lowers onto the LP, but right now it is just stuck in the air. i dont know if anyone knows this, but then the needle is stuck in the air, you actually cant listen to your records and it sucks.

    halp.

    What kind of turntable?
    I'm guessing it's fully automatic.

    Sony PSLX300USB

i have had it for a few years... ive been meaning to look into getting a new one, but money is TIGHT right now. so im hoping this isnt busted in the mean time...

Is your problem similar to this?

Since the Sony is a fully automatic turntable I am guessing you'd have to do some digging around and try to find the gears that control the automatic start/return mechanism. My guess is they'll be plastic gears.
Maybe under the platter. If not you'll likely have to flip it over & open it up.

Make they need to be oiled.
Honestly, I wouldn't know how to fix this but I'm just guessing the problem will be in the gears that control the automatic tonearm.

Quick fix: you can try to do is weigh it down with something (stack of coins, etc) but there's a GREAT possibility you will badly damage your records. So I wouldn't do that.

Thanks for finding that link - I'm on mobile right now so I'll have to read it when i get came and report back to you.
And yeah, I thought about weighing it down, but like you said, I'm scared of screwing my records - not worth it.
Worst case scenario I wait a month or two till I can buy a new one :/

ps- watched that video, that is pretty much the problem.

  12. i bought Michael Jackson - Bad lastnight because that album rules. And last week I ordered Lydia - This December, and Park - Jack the Rabbit.

Again, I've never owned a Sony but I think waiting a few months might be the best option. Unless you can take the platter off and see the gears that would control the automatic tonearm and make sure they are spinning properly, etc. If you're just going to replace it anyway it's worth a shot at fiddling around with it a bit.

I'm looking to switch over to vinyl, what's everyone's setup?

I'm looking at an Audio Technica AT-LP60BK with Polk Monitor 70 Series II Floorstanding Speakers.....any audiophiles out there tell me if this setup will rock my face off? I need my face melted.

I recommend upgrading to at least the AT-LP120. It's affordable and probably the best entry level if you're serious about listening on this format.

I was looking at the 120, i am a total admitted noob at this, but i thought that was more for DJ's haha.

It's based off the Technics 120 which DJs really liked but from what I understood was still a good player anyways. Depending on your budget is get the project carbon debut. I wish I had at the time.

It is considered a DJ turntable because of the options it offers.
Here's a list and links to explanations of what they do:
    Direct drive
    Quartz lock
Forward / Reverse control (no link. That's self-explanatory)
    Pitch control

These are all things that assist DJs in mixing records and scratching, etc.
Usually a DJ (meaning "club DJ" here) will have 2 turntables.

So those features up there assist a DJ in what they're trying to do.
However, just because it has those doesn't mean it isn't a reasonable option for just listening. I went with the AT 120 because it's an affordable direct-drive table.
