Is VMP worth signing up for?

    Maybe so, maybe not.

I'll let someone else chime in on this.

I held off forever but finally cracked and got a six-month subscription. First two records are Grimes' Visions and Modest Mouse's The Lonesome Crowded West which is an amazing two to start.

I think it’s worth signing up for a few months at a time when there’s something you really want. Best to do it when you have a bunch of money saved up to use in their store too

I held off until the featured records became too damn good and I’m awaiting my first record. I mean early Grimes, early Sigur Ros, and early Modest Mouse? That selection is pretty incredible… I think I’ll just cancel my subscription when I’m not as into their selection.

  7. I jumped on board for the Grievous Angel VMP treatment last fall because that's one of my all time favorite records and boy was I not disappointed. This first quarter I'm stoked about Agaetis/Visions/LCW like others and there's enough back catalog stuff I'd buy that even if the next few months aren't as interesting to me I doubt I'll cancel soon

  8. Also check out Magnolia Record Club, a little more folk/Americana inclined but I've gotten some good stuff from them recently...War on Drugs, Strand of Oaks, Wilco...

If you had the keys to the ship over at VMP for, like, three months, what records would you guys try to get pressed as exclusive releases in each track?

Great question. I'd probably do some weird ones like Jon Hassell, Laraaji, or Boards of Canada or something similarly ambient-focused that's more classic. I love listening to atmospheric records on vinyl more than anything. For hip-hop, some ideas that come to mind right away are Black Star, early Missy Elliot, maybe an underrated Maxwell or D'Angelo or Erykah Badu record. JMSN or NoName, or .Paak.

edit - would be cool to see some other genres highlighted by them. I'd be hyped to see something totally out of left field like early The Appleseed Cast or Cymbals Eat Guitars

  12. For the essentials at least I'd go with ones that I cannot find on vinyl lol

    The Wrens - The Meadowlands
Gillian Welch - Time (The Revelator)
Death Cab for Cutie - The Photo Album

I'd say Frank Ocean's two albums but no way Frank lets VMP do it lol

DC had a photo album anniversary up for pre order a few months ago. I snagged one of the clear one, waiting for it to ship still. I am not sure if they did a mass run of non clear ones, but they may have!

Honestly surprised they haven't done a Kanye record yet.

If they ever steered into the emo/pop-punk world, there are some big ones they could hit there.

Oh shit, did you miss the Photo Album re-press?!

    (These are great picks, btw.)

That seems to be the album that comes up the most in their social media comments when they ask questions like this.

I would definitely be banging the drum pretty hard for either This Desert Life or Hard Candy from Counting Crows. I prefer the latter, but could probably rally more interest around the former.

My selfish pick would be Butch Walker's Letters.

Another big one: Sara Bareilles, Kaleidoscope Heart.

For country, I'd probably focus a little less on the classic era than they have. A ton of '90s, 2000s, and 2010s stuff in/adjacent to that genre never got pressed. Miranda Lambert's Revolution seems like an obvious pick for them to get to at some point.

i've done VMP on and off a few times now. i would say when I first signed up, it was absolutely worth it. it's waned though. a lot of their albums lately are, frankly, albums you can find in any record store in the country for $20 less, just with a new color or "mastered from the original tapes" or whatever dumb shit like that. the fact that, if you do 3 months at a time, it's $40/month is pretty absurd and makes it something where I only sign up if it's something I absolutely need

that being said, their artwork and gatefolds really are top notch. it's a good product, just way overpriced except for the handful of months a year where they're pressing something you truly cannot get elsewhere

This tends to be my issue. Not that they should solely be doing albums that are hard to find/have never been pressed, but I think they could serve that utility more than they do. I always think it's interesting when they do albums that are readily available. Like, I love Sturgill, but Metamodern struck me as an odd choice for their second or third country album when it's pretty easy to find for $20 or cheaper. Seemed like they could have given that slot to something that's less well-served on the vinyl format.

  22. Bad day of mail. Amazon shipped a record in a bag. So it was completely fucked. And then my Hellogoodbye order came and the sleeve is a little damaged and the top seal completely separating. Record itself looks pretty though. Grumble.

    Maybe so, maybe not.

I’ve ordered a bunch through Amazon and only gotten the bag package once or twice. Was able to swap very easily.

  24. Yeah they don’t have it anymore :((( return was easy though, so grabbed what I wanted on Discogs instead. Still a bummer 95% of the time Amazon has been great. Super sad though. Waited like three weeks for it to come and my heart sank.
