It only took a couple situations of needing to switch my Debut Carbon to 33 rpm to 45 rpm for me to want a Speed Box.

This is a noob question, but is there any way to tell what setting to put the belt on by just looking at the record? I can't seem to get a handle on it.

Usually they say on the label but not always. Rarely have I had anything but a 7'' be a 45 rpm.

we've seen the shadow of the axe before Supporter

and if you can't find it on the label, discogs almost always has the speed listed.

I feel like I've seen it etched into the inner ring as well. Usually where the album data is.

Does it hurt your records if it's played on the wrong speed for a long period of time? Never done it, but curious.

I used to do this all the time when I first got into it and used whatever shitty ass player my grandparents had bought for us. As much as it kills me my first pressing of ...Is A Real Boy is probably fucked right now.

I would think the crappy player that probably applied way too much tracking force ruined stuff more so than the incorrect speed of playback.

That is what I was getting at. I would also go backwards/manually slow it down with my hand. I was an idiot.

My first situation of having to switch was putting on Carry the Fire and it needing to be 45, then Major/Minor required 45 too.

Static just builds up naturally from it spinning on the platter. Also, those paper sleeves don't help.
However, I use one of these for static buildup and find it helps A LOT.

It doesn't damage the needle or the records. You're not doing anything different to the needle. It sounds weird but it's traveling through the groove all the same. However, playing at 78rpm can do major damage to the regular hi-fi 33/45 styli. You should have a separate cartridge set up for 78 to be switched in/out.
In my experience any 78s you come across are heavily used (bargain bin at the record store and before that were in a jukebox or something) most of the time they are in terrible shape and will likely damage ANY stylus.

I guess my first post in this thread should be some kind of introduction. So here is my setup and my five latest purchases. My turntable is a Rega RP1 and the speakers I use are Audio Pro T8 (not pictured). They're small but have a really nice sound. Perfect for my small apartment.
And here's my Discogs account if anyone wants to check out my entire library!

Thanks. Don't think I'll ever come across 78rpms, but I've definitely caught it a few seconds in when it's not on the label. Sounds weird, but weirdly amusing at the same time. Reminds me of when I had use the Audacity audio program for a school project and I was inserting music and having fun with slowing it down.

I guess I could have posted a link to my Dead Format account at some point.

It only has about 1/4 of my collection on it, but that's as far as I got. I plan on finishing the update to it this weekend or next. Just waiting for this damn semester to be over.

talk about some of the technical stuff for newbies like myself; like preamps (i had no idea what these were, still don't)
importance of speakers on vinyl sound, auto v manual turntables,
i'd expect you to talk about how much Crosleys suck at least once per feature, AT LEAST

Tech stuff is always cool. I'd like to see a product round-up on newly released gadgets that are turntable related.
Also, highlighting specific releases would be cool. "Re-issue of the month" or something like that might be fun. People reflect on the original release and you can also point out what's new in the re-issue (artwork, bonus tracks, etc.)
