I typically buy my vinyl in bulk a few times a year. I rarely just buy one (unless I'm pre-ordering a new release) but generally, I'll buy like 5-6 at a time on Amazon or 5-6 at a time at my local record store and then I'll go months without buying one. I probably bought about 10 this year.

    Die rad.

After collecting and spinning vinyl for the last 9 years Ive realized it has become a hassle listening to a record. I hate having to get up from what im doing to flip a record up to 4 times. Like if I want to just lay on my bed and listen to a beautiful album like Alice In Chains unplugged I'd much rather play it through my streamer and lounge then get up 3 times to keep flipping the record every 15 minutes. It makes the environment more stressful cause you know you will need to get up and cant just sit there and enjoy it while relaxing. I still like the physical aspect of the record and presentation of the cover, but I tend to not buy many albums anymore. I used to get like 20 a year and I think in 2018 I got 2.

Talked about this a while back either here or on Vinyl Collective, but I tend to separate vinyl into "Needs" and "Wants" when it comes to finances.

Needs are the limited preorders, new albums from top bands I love, or rare records that have popped up on eBay for a price that I've researched and been ready to commit to.

Wants are the albums that I'd like to have but don't need at the time. If I've had a lighter couple of months without buying, then I'll bulk order a couple of those albums on an Amazon/eBay discount code type of deal (Black Friday usually has the best vinyl deals). It's also for albums where I don't necessarily want the best or coolest variant, just the music itself.

That being said, this philosophy usually gets tossed out the window during Christmas time because I just end up going ham on records for myself.

  11. It’s a slippery expensive slope, but it’s a blast. Especially when you’re first starting to build your collection. It almost feels like someone stole your entire CD collection and now you have to rebuild it ASAP. Haha. That’s how I felt anyway.

  13. Yeah it's super easy to go overboard when you start collecting since you have a lifetime worth of favorite albums to catch up on. I found that once I got most of my "classics" it was a lot easier to slow down.

Yeah I think I only bought 15 records this year. The most I've probably purchased in a year was close to 100.

  15. Just counted them up — bought an even 50 this year. Wayy more than I’d have guessed. I didn’t even think of this as being a bonus use for cataloging on Discogs!

Jesus, where do you guys have all the time to listen to 20+ new records in a month? Spin it once and shelf it? I get all funky ifI have more than 2 new records at once and dont spin them each atleast 10 times.

Who says they have to be listened to that month? I’ll be listening to these for a long while many times

I was definitely more restrained than in years past. I've thought more and more about shrinking my collection as of late. What seems to be common in this thread, is selling parts of collection because of important life decisions (house, wedding, engagement etc.)

For me, I want to add more $ to my engagement ring fund.

This is exactly how I was. I pretty much bought all of my 'must have' favorite albums of all-time right out of the gate (ones that I already owned on CD) for the first 1-2 years. After that, I started buying vinyl that was just too good of deals that I couldn't pass up and now I pretty much buy pre-orders/reissues from bands I still listen to and on occasion albums that I see good deals on via Amazon or local stores. I feel like I have every vinyl that I need. Everything else is just kind of icing on the cake.

I go through phases where I'll listen to a few in a week then won't listen to one for a month or so. I also rarely ever listen to the same record twice. I'm weird.

wrap yourself in petals for armor.

I went to Chicago last week and got to check out a cool shop called Reckless Records. I picked up:

Sara and Tegan - Under Feet Like Ours
    CHVRCHES - Hansa Session EP
    Halloween Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

To address the current thread train of thought right now....

I started seriously collecting vinyl this year. I had bought a couple here and there because I saw them more as collector's items than anything I'd really listen to. My mom bought me a record player a few years ago that I rarely ever used. At the end of last year, I got hired at a store that sold records and worked there until August of this year. I met a friend there who was super into collecting and she basically inspired me to start collecting for myself.

What this means is that I have bought close to 100 records this year. :verysad:

I just always have a record (usually my favorite at the moment) on my table and when I get home from work I'll just turn it on and let it play while I do dishes/other chores.
