oh God, had Lacey not been spouting ex-gay rhetoric (which informed a good chunk of songs on that album), i'd probably pick it up because i have a lot of nostalgia for that record

yup, apparently a lot of their earlier songs were about her "struggle with homosexuality".

i’ve been meaning to tell you

as an ex-christian gay who still enjoys a lot of music from that scene, i kind of assume most of those bands have shitty views... but i can igore them if they just keep their mouths shut lol

I said somewhere that while posters that come with target exclusives and cds/vinyl in general are kinda nice, I never use them. I lied

she does seem to be quiet about it nowadays (unlike some other prominent ex-gay figures). but personally it's difficult for me to try to go back and listen when that rhetoric is still so pervasive and harmful in 2024 (having been on the receiving end myself in prior years). not sure if i'll pick it up.

  10. I'm still trying to wrap my head around "ex-gay" is that like the equivalent of detransitioning? Going back in the closet and pretending that part of you doesn't exist? I guess that's a sign of a larger systemic issue, but if she really went through with that I kinda feel for her as an individual

And I'm not so sure now if I wanna pick it up either

yup, that's exactly it (although it'd probably be framed as "struggling with same sex attraction"). i believe in her book she mentioned she had simultaneously dealt with heavy depression and other things, and then her grandma took her to church to help her through it and she had a conversion experience and somehow realized she needed to break up with her girlfriend.

as someone who studies religious organizations, i can recognize the good that can come out of organized religion and how networks of aid, resources, and fellowship can help people dealing with depression, self-harm, substance abuse, etc. (although it's absolutely not a substitute for professional help). but it's sad seeing that that help usually comes wrapped up in dogma. one way a church will draw people in is by framing someone's problems as issues only religious dedication and participation will solve, so foregoing some of those beliefs might result in jeopardizing that assistance and community.

my hope is that Lacey has walked back some of those beliefs, because they're all over that first album, and while people can recontextualize those lyrics to mean something else (and whether it was Lacey's intention or not), those songs still act as a mouthpiece for that theology, which makes it difficult to stomach.

totally get it. truly sorry you’ve had to deal with that. honestly yeah i never forgive and never forget when it comes to homophobic rhetoric, lol. so this is a no for me, but it did rock back in the day. one of the only bands marketed as “paramore-adjacent” that really hit for me.

Yeah my beggars is sitting at home, and I’ll have to do the same. I had a gut feeling that this was going to happen due to the variant being one that was used previously… but thought based on the image and even the fact that they were charging so much that it would somehow be legit

Yeah, I mean, lost in this whole thing is that $50 all in for a single LP is a fucking crime. Even more so now that we know it included absolutely nothing special or unique (like b-sides or the OG cover).

Right?!? I knew the original cover fell through for licensing reasons so I naively thought that maybe the extra cost was to cover that in some way… nope lol

Just listened to the advances of Silverstein and LS Dunes today. First impressions of both were pretty positive, but I’m enjoying the Silverstein record more so far.
